Okayama
Okayama is the prefectural capital of Okayama Prefecture, located on the Seto Inland Sea coast of Honshu island in western Japan. With a population of approximately 720,000, it is one of the major cities of the Chugoku region and serves as an important transportation, commercial, and cultural hub between the Osaka-Kobe area to the east and Hiroshima to the west. Okayama enjoys a mild climate and is known for its sunny weather, earning it the nickname "the country of sunshine."
Okayama Castle, a striking black-lacquered fortress perched above the Asahi River, is the city's most recognizable landmark. Known as "Crow Castle" for its dark exterior, the castle was largely destroyed during World War II and reconstructed in 1966. Beside the castle grounds lies Korakuen, one of Japan's "Three Great Gardens" and a masterpiece of Japanese landscape garden design. Established in 1700, Korakuen features expansive lawns, ponds, teahouses, and traditional plantings arranged in a serene composition that draws visitors throughout all seasons.
Okayama has a rich history as a castle town and former feudal domain seat. The city has been associated with the legend of Momotarō, the "Peach Boy" of Japanese folklore, said to have come from this region. Peach motifs and Momotarō-themed shops, statues, and attractions are found throughout the city, and the local white peaches grown in the Okayama region are considered among the finest in Japan.
The city's cultural offerings include the Okayama Prefectural Museum of Art, the Orient Museum, housing a remarkable collection of ancient West Asian and Egyptian artifacts, and the Hayashibara Museum of Art. The city is also home to a thriving dining and nightlife scene centered around the Ichibanchō and Omotechō covered shopping arcades near the station.
Okayama Station is a major transportation node on the San'yo Shinkansen line, with bullet train connections to Tokyo, Osaka, Hiroshima, and Fukuoka. The city also serves as a gateway to Naoshima Island, internationally renowned for its contemporary art installations and architecture by Tadao Ando, which attracts art enthusiasts from around the world. Ferry services connect Okayama to the Seto Inland Sea islands.
Home to Okayama University and several other academic institutions, the city has a vibrant student population and a strong research base. Okayama's combination of castle heritage, world-class garden, art scene, excellent connectivity, and pleasant climate makes it an appealing and often underappreciated destination in western Japan.
