Oklahoma City

Oklahoma City is the capital and largest city of the state of Oklahoma in the south-central United States, situated on the North Canadian River in the heart of the Great Plains. With a population of approximately 700,000 in the city and over 1.4 million in the metropolitan area, it is one of the larger cities in the American Midwest-South region. Known for its oil heritage, Western culture, and remarkable urban revitalization in recent decades, Oklahoma City has transformed itself from a struggling oil-town into one of America's more dynamic and livable midsize cities.

Oklahoma City was born in one of the most extraordinary moments in American frontier history. On April 22, 1889, the Oklahoma Land Run opened the unassigned lands of Indian Territory to settlers, and within a single day, approximately 10,000 people arrived and staked claims on the land that would become Oklahoma City. This explosive founding event — unique in American urban history — is celebrated and commemorated in the city's identity and museums. Oklahoma became a state in 1907, and Oklahoma City was designated its capital in 1910.

The city gained national and global attention for a tragic reason on April 19, 1995, when the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building was destroyed by a domestic terrorist bombing, killing 168 people including 19 children. This event remains one of the deadliest domestic terrorist attacks in U.S. history. The Oklahoma City National Memorial and Museum, built on the site of the bombing, is a profoundly moving tribute to the victims and a thoughtful examination of the attack and its aftermath. The memorial's Reflecting Pool, Survivor Tree, and Field of Empty Chairs have become iconic symbols of remembrance and resilience.

Oklahoma City has undergone a remarkable urban renaissance since the early 2000s, driven by citizen-approved MAPS (Metropolitan Area Projects) initiatives that funded major public improvements including a new arena, canal district, parks, and arts facilities. The Bricktown entertainment district, centered on a restored warehouse district and canal, has become one of the city's most popular destinations. The Oklahoma City Thunder NBA franchise has energized the city's sports culture since 2008.

The National Cowboy and Western Heritage Museum is one of the premier institutions for Western American art and history in the country, housing an extraordinary collection of cowboy and Native American artifacts. The state's oil heritage is documented at the Oklahoma History Center, and the Paseo Arts District is a thriving center of local arts and culture.

Will Rogers World Airport provides domestic connections, and Oklahoma City is well positioned along Interstate 35 and 40 corridors. The city's combination of frontier history, oil heritage, resilient civic culture, and vibrant urban transformation makes it one of the American Midwest's most interesting and characterful metropolitan centers.
