Orël

Orël stands in central European Russia, some three hundred and sixty kilometres south of Moscow, at the point where the little Orlik river joins the Oka. The surrounding country is the classic Russian forest steppe, a landscape of black earth fields, birch woods and gentle river valleys that has inspired writers for two centuries. The climate is continental, with warm summers, long cold winters and a spring that arrives suddenly in April.

Around three hundred thousand people live in the city, which serves as the administrative centre of Oryol Oblast. Its economy rests on engineering, metalworking, food processing, glass and construction materials, while the surrounding region is among the most productive agricultural areas of central Russia.

The town was founded in 1566 on the order of Ivan the Terrible as a fortress guarding the southern approaches to Moscow against raids from the steppe. Its name means eagle, and the bird appears throughout the city's heraldry and monuments. Once the frontier moved south, Orël became a quiet provincial capital, a place of merchants, gardens and gentry estates, and it was this atmosphere that produced its extraordinary literary legacy.

Few cities of its size anywhere have such a claim on a nation's literature. Ivan Turgenev was born here and set much of his work in the surrounding countryside, and his family estate at Spasskoye-Lutovinovo, restored with its manor house, park and ponds, lies a short drive away and is one of the most atmospheric literary museums in Russia. Leonid Andreyev was also born in the city, Nikolai Leskov spent his youth here, and Ivan Bunin, Afanasy Fet and Fyodor Tyutchev all had close ties to the province. The result is a network of house museums, statues and quiet garden squares that make Orël a place of pilgrimage for readers.

The city suffered terribly in the Second World War. Occupied for almost two years and largely destroyed, it was liberated in August 1943 during the final phase of the Battle of Kursk, and the victory was marked in Moscow by the first artillery salute of the war, an honour that gave Orël the informal title of the city of the first salute. Postwar reconstruction produced the broad avenues and classical facades seen today, alongside surviving churches and merchant houses.

Visitors enjoy the riverside embankments, the monument marking the four hundredth anniversary of the founding, the Epiphany Cathedral, the regional museum of local history and a lively theatre named after Turgenev. Trams and trolleybuses have run for decades and are still part of daily life, giving the streets an unmistakable character.

Orël State University and several technical institutes bring a student population to the centre, and railway lines toward Moscow, Kursk and Bryansk make the city an important junction.

Orël is valued for its literary heritage, its wartime memory and the gentle beauty of the central Russian countryside that surrounds it.
