Orlando lies in the heart of central Florida, roughly midway between the Atlantic coast and the Gulf of Mexico, on a gently rolling plain dotted with more than a hundred lakes. The subtropical climate brings long, humid summers with dramatic afternoon thunderstorms and mild, dry winters that draw visitors from colder parts of North America and Europe.

The city itself has around three hundred thousand residents, but the surrounding metropolitan area is home to well over two and a half million people and remains one of the fastest growing regions in the United States. Orlando is known worldwide as the theme park capital of the world, welcoming more visitors each year than almost any other destination in the country, and tourism shapes much of its economy and character.

Its origins were far humbler. A military outpost called Fort Gatlin was established in the area in the late 1830s during conflicts with the Seminole people, and a small settlement grew nearby, taking the name Orlando and gaining formal town status in 1875. For decades it was a quiet citrus town, prospering on orange groves until severe freezes damaged the industry. The Second World War brought air bases, the space race brought aerospace and defence contractors, and everything changed in 1971 when Walt Disney World opened on land quietly assembled south of the city. Within a generation Orlando had transformed from an agricultural centre into a global resort destination.

Walt Disney World Resort, with its four theme parks and water parks, remains the anchor attraction, joined by Universal Orlando with its Wizarding World of Harry Potter and the newer Epic Universe park, along with SeaWorld and numerous smaller attractions. Beyond the resorts, the city offers a different personality. Lake Eola Park with its swan boats and illuminated fountain sits at the centre of downtown, while the historic Winter Park district nearby is famous for brick streets, boutiques and the Morse Museum, which holds the largest collection of Louis Comfort Tiffany glass in the world. The Orlando Museum of Art, the Dr. Phillips Center for the Performing Arts and a lively craft brewery and restaurant scene serve residents as much as tourists.

Orlando International Airport is one of the busiest in the country and a major gateway for international arrivals. The Brightline high speed service links the city to South Florida, SunRail commuter trains run along a north to south corridor, and an extensive road network connects the region, though most residents depend on cars. The University of Central Florida, with an enrolment among the largest of any American university, drives research in optics, simulation and digital media, and the Lake Nona area has grown into a substantial medical and life sciences cluster.

Cape Canaveral and the Kennedy Space Center lie about an hour to the east, adding rocket launches to the list of local spectacles. Sports fans follow the Orlando Magic basketball team and Orlando City soccer club, and the population is notably diverse, with large Puerto Rican, Venezuelan, Colombian and Haitian communities.

Orlando combines world famous entertainment with sunshine, growth and a surprising amount of everyday charm.
