Osasco
Osasco is a city in the state of São Paulo, Brazil, located immediately to the west of the city of São Paulo, forming part of the São Paulo metropolitan area. With a population of approximately 700,000, it is one of the most populous and economically significant municipalities in the greater São Paulo region. Osasco is particularly notable as one of Brazil's most important financial and industrial centers outside the capital itself.
The origins of Osasco are linked to Italian immigration in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Italian immigrants settled in the area that was then a district of São Paulo, working in agriculture and early industry. The community grew around a railway station on the Estrada de Ferro Sorocabana line, and the neighborhood gradually developed into a major industrial zone serving the expanding São Paulo metropolitan economy. Osasco was elevated to an independent municipality in 1962 following a local referendum, separating from São Paulo amid considerable political controversy.
Osasco is widely recognized as the "Financial Capital" of the state of São Paulo outside the capital city. The city is home to BankFacil, major insurance companies, and — most significantly — Bradesco, one of Brazil's largest and most powerful private banks, which has been headquartered in Osasco since its founding. Bradesco's sprawling campus in the city center employs thousands of people and has made Osasco a center of financial services activity in the broader São Paulo metro area.
The city has a diverse industrial base, with manufacturing in metalworking, chemicals, textiles, food processing, and automotive parts. The Centro Empresarial and various commercial and service sectors along the major arterials have developed strongly in recent decades. Despite its proximity to São Paulo, Osasco has developed its own distinct commercial and cultural identity, with active cultural centers, theaters, and public spaces serving its large population.
Osasco is well integrated into the São Paulo metropolitan transit network via CPTM (Companhia Paulista de Trens Metropolitanos) commuter rail lines and extensive bus services. The proximity to Rodovia Castelo Branco and other major expressways makes it easily accessible from across the metropolitan region. Several universities and educational institutions in the city contribute to its workforce and civic life.
Osasco's combination of financial sector leadership, industrial diversity, and its role as an integral part of the São Paulo metropolitan economy make it one of Brazil's most economically significant medium-sized cities — a dynamic urban community that has built a powerful identity within the shadow of Latin America's largest city.
