Ottawa
Ottawa is the capital city of Canada, located in the province of Ontario on the southern bank of the Ottawa River, directly across from Gatineau, Quebec. Positioned at the meeting point of the Ottawa, Rideau, and Gatineau rivers, the city enjoys a geographically dramatic setting enhanced by the Rideau Canal, which runs through its heart. With a population of approximately one million in the city proper and over 1.4 million in the greater metropolitan area, Ottawa is Canada's fourth-largest city and its political and administrative nerve center.
The city's global importance stems primarily from its role as Canada's national capital, home to the federal government, Parliament, the Supreme Court, and dozens of national museums, galleries, and cultural institutions. Ottawa also has a thriving technology sector — earning it the nickname "Silicon Valley North" — and a large bilingual population that reflects Canada's French-English duality, with Gatineau across the river being a predominantly French-speaking city.
Ottawa's history as a settlement began with Indigenous peoples who used the Ottawa River as a travel and trade route for thousands of years. European settlers arrived in the early nineteenth century, and the town of Bytown — named after Colonel John By, who oversaw construction of the Rideau Canal — was incorporated in 1850 and renamed Ottawa in 1855. Queen Victoria selected Ottawa as the capital of the Province of Canada in 1857, a choice that surprised many who expected a larger city. When the Dominion of Canada was established in 1867, Ottawa became the national capital.
The city's most iconic landmark is Parliament Hill, a dramatic Gothic Revival complex overlooking the Ottawa River, where the Centre Block houses the House of Commons and the Senate. The Peace Tower, rising from the Centre Block, is one of Canada's most recognized symbols. The Rideau Canal — a UNESCO World Heritage Site — stretches through the city center and transforms into the world's largest naturally frozen skating rink each winter, attracting hundreds of thousands of skaters. Byward Market, one of Canada's oldest and largest public markets, offers fresh produce, restaurants, galleries, and nightlife in a historic urban neighborhood.
Ottawa's cultural landscape is extraordinary for a city of its size. It is home to the National Gallery of Canada, the Canadian Museum of History (just across the river in Gatineau), the Canadian War Museum, the Canada Science and Technology Museum, and the Museum of Nature, among others. The National Arts Centre presents world-class performances in music, theater, and dance throughout the year. Canada Day celebrations on Parliament Hill attract enormous crowds and are broadcast nationally.
Ottawa has an extensive public transportation network operated by OC Transpo, including the O-Train light rail system that provides rapid transit connections across the urban core and suburbs. The city is also highly regarded for its cycling infrastructure, with hundreds of kilometers of dedicated bike paths. Ottawa Macdonald-Cartier International Airport connects the city to destinations across Canada, the United States, and internationally.
Education is a major pillar of Ottawa's identity. The University of Ottawa, founded in 1848, is one of the world's largest bilingual universities, offering programs in both English and French. Carleton University is renowned for its journalism, engineering, and public policy programs. The presence of numerous federal research institutions and think tanks adds further intellectual depth to the city.
Ottawa's economy is anchored by government and public administration, technology and telecommunications, health sciences, and education. Companies such as Shopify, which was founded in Ottawa, have put the city on the global technology map. The city's blend of political significance, cultural richness, natural beauty — including Gatineau Park nearby — and high standard of living consistently makes it one of the most desirable places to live in Canada and the world.
