Oujda

Oujda is a major city in northeastern Morocco, situated close to the border with Algeria in the Oriental Region. With a population of approximately 600,000, it is the largest city in eastern Morocco and one of the most important urban centers in the country. Its strategic location at the crossroads of routes connecting Morocco with Algeria and beyond has shaped its character as a city of trade, cultural exchange, and historical significance throughout the centuries.

The city was founded in 994 CE by Ziri ibn Atiyya, a Berber chieftain of the Maghrawa tribe, making it one of the oldest cities in the Maghreb region. Over the centuries, Oujda changed hands numerous times, falling under the control of various dynasties including the Marinids, Zayyanids, and Saadians, as well as periods of Ottoman and Alaouite rule. Its position near the Algerian border made it a contested frontier territory that bore witness to many of the conflicts and alliances that shaped the political landscape of North Africa.

The old medina of Oujda is the historical heart of the city, enclosed by ancient walls and filled with a labyrinth of winding alleyways, traditional souks, and historic mosques. The Grand Mosque of Oujda and the nearby shrine of Sidi Yahia are important religious landmarks that draw both pilgrims and visitors interested in Islamic architecture and heritage. Bab el-Ouahab, a historic city gate, stands as one of the most recognizable monuments of the medina and a symbol of the city's long history of habitation and defense.

Oujda is known for a vibrant musical tradition, particularly its association with gnawa music and chaabi, styles deeply rooted in the cultural heritage of the region. The city's proximity to Algeria has created a distinctive cultural blend in local music, cuisine, and dialect that sets it apart from other Moroccan cities. This cultural fusion is celebrated in various local festivals and social gatherings that bring together communities from both sides of the border.

The University Mohammed Premier in Oujda is one of Morocco's significant higher education institutions, serving tens of thousands of students in disciplines ranging from law and economics to science and technology. The university's presence contributes to the city's youthful energy and supports a growing service and commercial sector that provides employment for an increasingly educated urban population.

The local economy depends on trade, agriculture, the informal economy linked to cross-border commerce, and remittances from a large Moroccan diaspora community in Europe. Improved road and rail connections link Oujda to Fes, Casablanca, and other Moroccan cities, facilitating the movement of people and goods across the country. As Morocco invests in the development of its eastern regions, Oujda is increasingly positioned as a hub of economic activity and cultural life in one of the kingdom's most historically rich territories.
