Oviedo

Oviedo is the capital city of the Principality of Asturias in northwestern Spain, situated inland between the Bay of Biscay coast and the Cantabrian Mountains. With a population of approximately 220,000 inhabitants, it is the administrative, cultural, and educational center of the region and one of the most elegant and well-preserved historic cities in northern Spain. Oviedo is distinguished by its exceptional collection of pre-Romanesque monuments, its beautiful historic city center, and its role as the starting point of the Camino Primitivo, the oldest pilgrimage route to Santiago de Compostela.

The pre-Romanesque monuments of Oviedo represent one of the most extraordinary chapters in European architectural history. Built during the Kingdom of Asturias in the 9th century, they belong to the Asturian architectural style that emerged as one of the first original post-Roman artistic expressions in Christian Europe. The Church of Santa María del Naranco, originally built as a royal hall for King Ramiro I and later converted into a church, and the Church of San Miguel de Lillo, an exquisitely proportioned palatine chapel with remarkable stone carvings, were collectively inscribed on UNESCO's World Heritage List in 1985. Together with the Santullano church and the Foncalada fountain, they represent a unique and irreplaceable heritage of early medieval art.

The historic city center of Oviedo is a compact and thoroughly pleasant area of pedestrianized streets, handsome plazas, and fine Baroque architecture. The Cathedral of San Salvador, housing the Cámara Santa (Holy Chamber) which contains priceless relics and sacred objects and is itself a UNESCO monument, is the spiritual heart of the city. The surrounding streets, including the elegant Calle Uría and the lively Calle Gascona (known as the Boulevard of Cider for its cider bars), provide excellent shopping, dining, and entertainment.

Oviedo gained unexpected international fame when the filmmaker Woody Allen, who received the Prince of Asturias Award here in 2002, famously described it as a delicious city, adding that it seemed unreal, so pristine and pretty. The city embraced this compliment with characteristic humor, placing a bronze statue of the filmmaker on the Calle Uría, where he has become one of the most photographed figures in the city. The Prince of Asturias Awards, presented annually in Oviedo by the heir to the Spanish throne, bring international attention to the city each October and honor achievements in arts, sciences, and humanities.

Asturian culture and gastronomy are deeply felt in Oviedo. Sidra (cider), produced from the apple orchards that cover much of the Asturian countryside, is the emblematic drink of the region, poured in the distinctive long-drop style from traditional cider bars. The fabada asturiana, a rich stew of white beans with chorizo, morcilla, and lacón, is the most celebrated regional dish. The fish and seafood available in Oviedo's market and restaurants reflect the proximity of the Cantabrian coast.

Oviedo's combination of unique pre-Romanesque monuments, elegant urban environment, vibrant cultural life, and deep-rooted regional identity makes it one of the most rewarding destinations in northern Spain, offering a depth of experience that repays careful exploration.
