Pamplona
Pamplona is a historic city in northern Spain, the capital of the Foral Community of Navarre, situated in the valley of the Arga River at the foot of the Pyrenees. Best known internationally for the San Fermín festival and its famous Running of the Bulls, Pamplona is a city of deep historical significance, a major stop on the Camino de Santiago pilgrimage, and a vibrant regional capital with excellent cuisine and an attractive old town.
With a population of approximately 205,000, Pamplona is the political, economic, and cultural center of Navarre, one of Spain's most prosperous autonomous communities. The city has a strong industrial base, particularly in automotive manufacturing and the broader manufacturing sector, complemented by a significant university presence — the University of Navarre, founded by Opus Dei in 1952, and the Public University of Navarre — that gives the city an academic and professional character.
Pamplona was founded by the Roman general Pompey (Gnaeus Pompeius Magnus) around 75 BC, and its name derives directly from Pompaelo, the Roman settlement. It served as an important stop on Roman roads crossing the Pyrenees and later became the capital of the medieval Kingdom of Navarre, a powerful state that once stretched from the Atlantic to the Mediterranean. The Old Town (Casco Antiguo) retains its medieval street grid and is enclosed by the remarkable Renaissance fortification walls built in the 16th and 17th centuries, now converted into an 8-kilometer continuous public promenade — one of the best-preserved urban defensive systems in Europe.
The Cathedral of Pamplona (Catedral de Santa María la Real) is a Gothic structure completed in the 15th century, with a striking Neoclassical façade added in the 18th century. Its cloister is considered one of the finest examples of French Gothic in Spain. The Museo de Navarra, housed in a former Renaissance hospital, contains exceptional collections of Roman mosaics, medieval art including a remarkable collection of Romanesque capitals from the old cathedral, and works by Goya. The Ciudadela, the city's star-shaped Renaissance fortress, is now a public park used for events and exhibitions.
The Fiesta de San Fermín, running from 6 to 14 July, is one of the most famous festivals in the world, immortalized by Ernest Hemingway in his 1926 novel The Sun Also Rises. The encierro (running of the bulls) through the narrow streets of the old town each morning brings together daring runners and fighting bulls in one of the world's most dangerous and thrilling spectacles. The festival also features bullfights in the Plaza de Toros, concerts, fireworks, and communal celebrations in the streets from which no resident or visitor can escape entirely.
Pamplona lies on the AP68 motorway connecting it to Logroño and Bilbao, and on the N121 to Zaragoza. High-speed rail connections link it to Madrid in about one and a half hours. Pamplona Airport has domestic services. The city is a major stop on the Camino Francés route to Santiago de Compostela.
Pamplona is a city that lives intensely — both in its famous July festival and in the everyday vitality of a proud regional capital with centuries of independent identity.
