Panipat

Panipat is a city in the state of Haryana in northern India, standing on the Grand Trunk Road about ninety kilometres north of Delhi on the flat plain between the Yamuna and the Ghaggar. Its position on the historic route between the Punjab and the capital region has shaped everything about it, from the armies that once marched through to the lorries that thunder along the modern highway today. The climate is continental, with fierce summers, a short monsoon and cool, foggy winters.

Some four hundred and fifty thousand people live in the urban area, which serves as a district headquarters and one of the busiest industrial towns in Haryana. Panipat is known internationally as a textile centre, and its factories and workshops recycle used clothing from around the world into yarn, blankets, carpets, curtains and furnishing fabrics on a scale unmatched anywhere else. The nickname City of Weavers is well earned, and a large oil refinery and petrochemical complex north of the town add heavy industry to the mix.

The city's fame, however, rests on war. Three battles fought on the plains here decided the fate of northern India. In 1526 Babur defeated the Sultan of Delhi and founded the Mughal Empire; in 1556 the young Akbar secured that empire against Hemu; and in 1761 the Marathas were crushed by Ahmad Shah Durrani in one of the bloodiest engagements ever fought on the subcontinent. Tradition also links the site to Panduprastha, one of the five villages sought by the Pandavas in the Mahabharata, giving the place a mythological depth alongside its recorded history.

Several monuments recall these events. The Kabuli Bagh mosque and garden were raised by Babur to mark his victory, the Kala Amb memorial stands on the field of the third battle, and the Panipat Museum interprets the campaigns with maps, weapons and models. The domed tomb and shrine of the Sufi saint Bu Ali Shah Qalandar attracts pilgrims of many faiths, while the Salar Gunj gate, the old Devi temple and the Ibrahim Lodi tomb are further reminders of a long and turbulent past.

Daily life revolves around workshops and markets. Handloom weaving remains a household craft in many neighbourhoods, and traders from across India and abroad come to buy floor coverings and home textiles. The population includes large communities descended from refugees who arrived from Pakistan in 1947, and their enterprise did much to build the modern textile trade. Local food is robust Haryanvi fare, heavy on wheat, dairy and mustard greens.

National Highway 44 and a busy railway line connect Panipat directly to Delhi, Chandigarh and Amritsar, and commuter services make it part of the wider capital region. Engineering and management colleges and a technical university serve local students.

Panipat is remembered as a battlefield of empires and valued today as one of India's great manufacturing towns.
