Current Time in Parakou, Benin

Parakou is the largest city in northern Benin and the capital of the Borgou department, lying about four hundred kilometres inland from the Atlantic coast on the wooded savanna of the West African interior. The landscape around it is open country of tall grasses, shea and mango trees, crossed by seasonal rivers, with a single rainy season from May to October and a hot, dusty harmattan wind blowing down from the Sahara between December and February.

Around three hundred thousand people live in Parakou, which makes it the third largest city in the country and by far the most important urban centre north of the Beninese plateau. Its economy is built on trade and transport. Cotton from the surrounding fields is collected, ginned and shipped from here, and the city serves as a staging post for goods travelling between the port of Cotonou and landlocked Niger, giving it a constant traffic of lorries, warehouses and market activity. Cashew nuts, shea butter, maize, yams and livestock all pass through its markets, and food processing, textiles and services provide additional employment.

The city grew from a Dendi and Bariba settlement at a meeting point of trade routes, and its name is often explained as meaning the town of everyone, a reference to the many peoples who gathered here. It became significant during the French colonial period, when it was chosen as the southern terminus of the railway built inland from Cotonou, completed in 1936. That line, operated for decades as the Benin and Niger railway, turned Parakou into the natural gateway to the north and drew merchants and migrants from across the region. Growth accelerated after independence in 1960, and the city expanded rapidly in the final decades of the twentieth century.

Visitors find a lively rather than a monumental city. The central market is one of the busiest in Benin, filled with cloth, spices, enamelware and agricultural produce, and the open-air museum of Parakou displays traditional dwellings, tools and musical instruments of the peoples of the north. The great mosque, the cathedral and the residence of the traditional Bariba chief are landmarks of the old town, and workshops producing leather, metalwork and woven cotton can be visited nearby. The Gaani festival, celebrated by the Bariba with horsemen in ceremonial dress, drumming and processions, is the most spectacular event of the year, while the W and Pendjari national parks in the far north are reached from here.

Bariba, Dendi, Fulani, Yoruba and Nagot communities live side by side, and French serves as the shared language alongside several local tongues. The University of Parakou, founded in 2001, has grown into a substantial institution with faculties of medicine, agronomy, law and economics, and it has made the city an educational centre for the whole northern region. An airport, the main national highway and long-distance bus services connect Parakou with Cotonou and with Niger and Burkina Faso.

Parakou is important as the commercial capital of northern Benin and as a crossroads of peoples, goods and cultures in West Africa.
