Paranaque City
Parañaque City is a highly urbanized city located in the southern part of Metro Manila, the National Capital Region of the Philippines. With a population of approximately 690,000, it is one of the most densely populated cities in the metropolitan area and plays a crucial role as a commercial, residential, and entertainment hub in southern Metro Manila. Parañaque is bordered by Pasay and Taguig to the north, Las Piñas and Muntinlupa to the south, and Manila Bay to the west.
The city's history stretches back to the Spanish colonial era, when it was established as a municipality in the late 16th century. The name "Parañaque" is believed to derive from indigenous terms, and the city developed along the shores of Manila Bay as a community of fishermen and farmers. Under American colonial rule and through the 20th century, the area industrialized and urbanized, eventually becoming one of the key components of Metro Manila's southern corridor.
Parañaque is home to Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA), the primary international gateway of the Philippines, which handles tens of millions of passengers annually. While the airport's multiple terminals are divided between Parañaque and neighboring Pasay City, its presence makes Parañaque a critical logistics and transportation hub for the entire archipelago. Plans for a new major international airport elsewhere in the region have been under discussion to address NAIA's capacity constraints.
The city is also home to the Entertainment City, a major integrated resort and entertainment district built on reclaimed land along Manila Bay. This complex includes luxury casino resorts such as Solaire Resort, City of Dreams, Okada Manila, and Resorts World Manila — together making Parañaque the gambling and entertainment capital of the Philippines and one of the largest gaming entertainment zones in Asia. Entertainment City has transformed the Manila Bay waterfront and become a major draw for both domestic and international visitors.
Parañaque has a notable religious heritage, particularly the Don Bosco Parish and Oratory and the Baclaran Church (National Shrine of Our Mother of Perpetual Help), one of the most visited religious sites in the Philippines. Baclaran Church draws enormous crowds of devotees every Wednesday for its famous novena, making it one of the busiest Catholic churches in the world.
Parañaque's combination of major airport infrastructure, world-class entertainment and gaming facilities, strong Catholic religious heritage, and its position in one of Asia's most dynamic metropolitan areas make it a city of extraordinary commercial and cultural significance within the Philippine capital region.
