Pasarkemis lies in Tangerang Regency in the Indonesian province of Banten, on the flat coastal plain west of Jakarta and only a short distance from the edge of the capital's built-up area. The land here is low and gently sloping, crossed by the Cisadane River and its irrigation channels, and until recently it was covered by rice fields and villages. Today it forms part of the vast urban region known as Jabodetabek, one of the largest metropolitan areas in the world.

More than three hundred thousand people live in the district, and the population continues to grow at a remarkable pace. Pasarkemis has become one of the main areas of housing expansion west of Jakarta, with several very large planned residential developments providing homes for families priced out of the capital. Its economy combines these dormitory functions with substantial industry, since Tangerang Regency is one of the leading manufacturing zones in Indonesia, producing footwear, textiles, garments, food, chemicals, plastics and electronics for domestic sale and export. Markets, small workshops and services employ many others.

The name means Thursday market, referring to the weekly trading day that once brought villagers together at this spot, and the area was for centuries an agricultural district within the sphere of the Sultanate of Banten. Dutch colonial rule brought plantations and rice estates, and the district remained rural well into the twentieth century, populated by Sundanese and Betawi farming communities. Industrialisation reached Tangerang in the 1970s and 1980s, and from the 1990s onwards property developers began converting the surrounding fields into estates, shopping centres and industrial parks, a transformation that accelerated dramatically in the last two decades.

Pasarkemis is not a tourist destination in itself, but it makes a practical base for exploring the region. Old Tangerang, about half an hour away, preserves a distinctive Chinese-Indonesian heritage in the Benteng community, with the Boen Tek Bio temple, colonial shophouses and a museum devoted to local history. The beaches and fishing harbours of the Java Sea coast, the mangroves of Tanjung Pasir and the boats to the Thousand Islands lie to the north, while the volcanoes, hot springs and tea plantations of West Java rise to the south. Jakarta itself, with its museums, monuments, old harbour and old town, is easily reached.

Local life reflects a mixture of Sundanese, Betawi and Javanese traditions along with newcomers from every part of Indonesia. Mosques, weekly markets, food stalls and street vendors form the fabric of daily routine, and celebrations of Idul Fitri, Independence Day and local weddings fill the streets with music and shared meals. Regional food includes sate bandeng, laksa Tangerang, nasi uduk and sweet snacks made from rice flour.

Toll roads and arterial highways link the district to Jakarta and to Soekarno-Hatta International Airport, which is close by, and commuter rail lines and bus services serve the wider region. Numerous schools, polytechnics and private university campuses have opened as the population has grown.
