Pasir Gudang lies on the southern coast of Johor, the southernmost state of peninsular Malaysia, on the northern shore of the Johor Strait about thirty kilometres east of Johor Bahru. Across the narrow water lies Singapore, and the strait here is busy with tankers, container ships and tugs. The name means sandy warehouse in Malay, and it suits a place that was created around a harbour and its cargo.

The city has a population of well over three hundred thousand and was granted city status in 2020, having grown from a small fishing village in the space of half a century. Its importance is industrial and maritime. The Port of Pasir Gudang and the neighbouring Tanjung Langsat terminal handle palm oil, petrochemicals, containers and bulk cargo, making them among the busiest facilities in Malaysia, and the surrounding estates host oil refining, chemical plants, shipbuilding, steel and electronics manufacturing.

Before the 1970s this stretch of coast supported small Malay fishing settlements and plantations of oil palm and rubber. The Johor state government designated the area for heavy industry and port development, and construction began in earnest in the mid-1970s. Workers arrived from across Malaysia, townships such as Kota Masai and Taman Scientex were laid out, and within a generation an entirely new urban area had appeared. In recent years Pasir Gudang has been incorporated into the Iskandar Malaysia development corridor, which aims to build a metropolitan region across the south of Johor in partnership with Singapore.

The city is best known internationally for kites. The Pasir Gudang World Kite Festival, held every year since the 1990s, brings hundreds of kite flyers from dozens of countries to a hillside field where enormous, brilliantly coloured creations fill the sky, and the associated Kite Museum, shaped like a kite itself, displays traditional Malaysian wau alongside examples from around the world. The waterfront park, the Bukit Layang-Layang recreational area and the mangrove reserves along the strait provide green space, while nearby Desaru on the South China Sea coast offers beaches within an hour's drive.

Everyday life reflects Malaysia's mix of Malay, Chinese and Indian communities, with mosques, temples and churches, night markets selling satay, laksa and roti canai, and festivals from Hari Raya to Chinese New Year and Deepavali celebrated in turn. The city has invested in sports facilities, community halls and shopping centres, and it maintains a young, working population.

Highways connect Pasir Gudang directly to Johor Bahru, to the two causeways leading into Singapore and to the North–South Expressway running the length of the peninsula, while Senai International Airport lies about an hour away. Schools, polytechnics and vocational colleges serve local needs, with the main campus of Universiti Teknologi Malaysia nearby at Skudai.

Pasir Gudang has faced environmental challenges typical of rapid industrial growth and has worked to strengthen monitoring and controls. It remains a young, purposeful city that shows how quickly modern Malaysia has been built.
