Pattaya
Pattaya is a resort city on the eastern coast of the Gulf of Thailand, located in Chonburi Province about 140 kilometers southeast of Bangkok. One of Thailand's most visited tourist destinations and one of the busiest beach resort cities in Asia, Pattaya has transformed from a small fishing village into a sprawling international resort over the past 60 years, offering a vast range of accommodation, entertainment, water sports, and dining options that attract millions of visitors from around the world.
The greater Pattaya area has a population of approximately 120,000 residents, supplemented at any given time by hundreds of thousands of tourists and expatriates. The city has a significant Russian, European, and East Asian visitor base, reflecting its reputation as an accessible, value-for-money beach destination with year-round warm weather. The city's proximity to Bangkok's Suvarnabhumi Airport — about 90 minutes by road — makes it an easy addition to any Bangkok itinerary.
Pattaya began its transformation from fishing village to resort city when American servicemen stationed at the U-Tapao air base during the Vietnam War began using it as a rest and recreation destination in the 1960s. The subsequent decades saw rapid and largely unplanned development of hotels, bars, and entertainment venues, creating an infrastructure focused heavily on mass tourism and adult entertainment. This reputation, though still partially accurate for certain districts, has been supplemented in recent decades by more family-oriented attractions, luxury resort development, and a broader tourism offer.
Pattaya Beach, the central urban beach, is a broad arc of sand lined with hotels, restaurants, and watersports operators. While the water quality has improved significantly following investment in sewage treatment, the beach is primarily a social rather than a swimming destination. Jomtien Beach, a few kilometers south and more sheltered, offers a quieter alternative. The offshore island of Koh Larn, 45 minutes by ferry from Pattaya, has excellent snorkeling beaches and is the most popular day excursion.
The city has developed a significant range of family and cultural attractions including Nong Nooch Tropical Botanical Garden (with Thailand's only topiary garden of international scale), the Sanctuary of Truth (a vast wooden temple under perpetual construction, filled with intricately carved mythological scenes), and the Underwater World Pattaya aquarium. Pattaya also has a thriving watersports scene including kitesurfing at Jomtien, deep-sea fishing, and dive trips to nearby wrecks.
The Eastern Seaboard of Thailand surrounding Pattaya has developed into one of the most industrialized areas of the country, with major industrial estates and the EEC (Eastern Economic Corridor) special economic zone nearby. This industrial development coexists with the resort economy and has attracted a large community of long-term foreign residents working in the region's manufacturing sector.
Pattaya is connected to Bangkok by the expressway (Motorway 7) and by bus and minivan services. The nearest airports are Suvarnabhumi and U-Tapao International Airport in nearby Rayong, which handles domestic and some international services. Local transport within the city is primarily provided by the local baht buses (songthaews).
Pattaya is a city of vivid contrasts — brash and commercial in some areas, surprisingly peaceful in others — offering one of the most diverse and affordable beach resort experiences in Southeast Asia.
