Paulista

Paulista is a coastal city in the state of Pernambuco in northeastern Brazil, lying immediately north of Recife and forming part of its metropolitan region. The municipality reaches from the Atlantic shore inland across low hills and the valleys of small rivers, and its beaches face warm water protected in places by reefs. The tropical climate is hot all year, with a rainy season concentrated in the southern winter months.

Around three hundred and thirty thousand people live in Paulista, making it one of the largest municipalities in the state. Much of the population commutes to Recife for work, but the city also has its own industrial estates, commerce and a growing tourism sector based on its coastline.

The name comes from a sugar estate and later from the great textile mill, the Companhia de Tecidos Paulista, founded here in the late nineteenth century and expanded by the Lundgren family into one of the largest cotton manufacturing operations in Latin America. The company built entire workers villages, schools, a hospital, a cinema and a stadium, and for decades the life of the town revolved around the factory whistle. The mill closed in the 1990s, but the industrial villages, the chimneys and the company church remain as reminders of that period, and the Lundgren name is also remembered because the family founded the Casas Pernambucanas chain of stores.

The oldest monument in the district is the fort at Pau Amarelo, a squat coastal work first raised by the Dutch during their seventeenth century occupation of northeastern Brazil and rebuilt in stone by the Portuguese in the eighteenth century. It stands directly on the sand and now houses a small museum, and it is one of the few surviving traces of the Dutch presence outside Recife.

The beaches are the main attraction. Praia de Maria Farinha, at the mouth of the Timbó River, is a calm and sheltered stretch popular with families and known for boat trips and floating restaurants; Janga and Pau Amarelo have a livelier local character, with barracas selling crab and cold beer and with reef pools that form at low tide. Just inland stands the Veneza Water Park, one of the largest water parks in Latin America, which draws visitors from across the northeast.

Cultural life follows the rhythms of Pernambuco, with frevo and maracatu in the carnival season, forró in June for the festivals of Saint John, and a strong tradition of street music. Local cuisine features seafood, tapioca, cassava dishes and the sugar cane spirits of the region.

Buses connect Paulista to Recife, and the metropolitan rail network and the international airport at Recife are within easy reach, while the PE 15 highway runs along the coast towards the historic town of Igarassu and the island of Itamaracá.

Colleges and technical institutes operate locally, with the major universities of Pernambuco a short journey away in Recife.

Paulista matters as an industrial heritage town turned seaside destination, offering quiet beaches within easy reach of a great northeastern capital.
