Current Time in Percut, Indonesia

Percut, more fully Percut Sei Tuan, lies on the north-eastern coast of Sumatra in Indonesia, within Deli Serdang Regency and directly adjoining the eastern edge of Medan, the largest city on the island. The district stretches from crowded suburban neighbourhoods down through rice fields and fish ponds to a low, muddy shoreline of mangroves and tidal creeks facing the Strait of Malacca. The climate is equatorial, hot and humid throughout the year.

Several hundred thousand people live in the district, making it one of the most populous local units in North Sumatra. Its importance comes from its position. Percut Sei Tuan functions as part of the Medan metropolitan area, providing housing for workers, land for factories and warehouses, and a working coastline of fishing villages and aquaculture that supplies the city's markets with shrimp, crab and sea fish every morning.

The area belonged historically to the Sultanate of Deli, a Malay state on this coast whose rulers granted concessions to European planters in the nineteenth century. That decision transformed the region, as Dutch companies established enormous tobacco, rubber and oil palm estates and imported labourers from Java, China and India, creating the diverse population that still characterises the area. The village of Percut itself was an old fishing and trading settlement at a river mouth, and Sei Tuan refers to the waterway that runs through the district. Suburban expansion after Indonesian independence, and especially in the last forty years, filled the inland parts with housing.

Percut is not a tourist destination in the conventional sense, but it has real attractions for the curious. Percut beach and the mangrove areas at the coast are popular weekend destinations for Medan families, offering seafood shacks on stilts, boat rides through the channels and, for birdwatchers, one of the more accessible sites in Sumatra to observe migratory shorebirds that stop here on the East Asian flyway. Community-led mangrove replanting projects have become a small ecotourism attraction in themselves. The Deli Serdang countryside beyond has traditional Malay houses, plantations and river landscapes.

Local culture reflects a genuine mixture of Deli Malay, Javanese, Batak, Mandailing, Chinese and Indian communities. Mosques predominate, but churches and temples are present too, and the food is one of the highlights, from Malay fish curries and grilled seafood to Batak dishes, Javanese street food and the strong sweet coffee for which Medan is famous. Weddings, Islamic holidays and harvest celebrations bring neighbourhoods together.

Transport is straightforward. The district is crossed by main roads into Medan and by the toll road serving Kualanamu International Airport, which lies a short distance away in the same regency and is one of the largest airports in Indonesia. Buses, minibuses and motorcycle taxis handle local journeys. Percut Sei Tuan is also the site of the State University of Medan, a major teacher-training and general university, which gives parts of the district a student atmosphere.
