Phuket

Phuket is Thailand's largest island, located in the Andaman Sea off the western coast of southern Thailand, connected to the mainland by two bridges across the Sarasin Straits. One of the most visited destinations in Southeast Asia and a global symbol of tropical beach tourism, Phuket combines stunning white-sand beaches, a turquoise sea, vibrant nightlife, world-class diving, luxury resorts, and a rich cultural heritage shaped by Chinese, Malay, Portuguese, and Thai influences.

Phuket Province has a population of approximately 420,000 residents, supplemented by millions of international tourists arriving each year. Phuket International Airport is one of the busiest in Thailand, with direct flights from across Europe, Asia, and Australia, making Phuket one of the most accessible tropical island destinations in the world. The island's economy is dominated by tourism, and the rapid development of the past three decades has transformed much of the coastline while also creating the infrastructure necessary to serve a mass international visitor base.

Phuket's coastline stretches for over 200 kilometers, with dozens of beaches of varying character. Patong, the most developed and famous beach, is a long arc of white sand backed by hotels, shopping centers, and the exuberant Bangla Road nightlife strip. Kata, Karon, Kamala, Surin, and Bang Tao offer calmer alternatives with clearer water and a more upscale atmosphere. The southern tip of the island has the rocky coves and clear waters of Rawai and Chalong, popular with the sailing and diving community. The nearby Similan Islands National Park, accessible by boat from Phuket's southern coast, is among the finest dive sites in the world.

Phuket Town, the island's capital on the eastern coast, is a rewarding destination for those interested in the island's history and culture. Its Sino-Portuguese shophouse architecture — colorful two-story buildings with colonnaded sidewalks, built by Chinese merchants who grew wealthy from the island's tin mining industry — is distinctive and charming. The Old Town has undergone significant renovation in recent years and now hosts excellent restaurants, art galleries, and boutique hotels. The Phuket Vegetarian Festival, held each October, is one of Thailand's most dramatic religious events, featuring elaborate processions and extraordinary acts of devotion.

The Big Buddha, a 45-meter white marble statue on Nakkerd Hill visible from much of southern Phuket, is the island's most prominent spiritual landmark. Wat Chalong, the most important Buddhist temple on the island, is a popular place of worship and pilgrimage. Cape Promthep at the southern tip of the island, flanked by dramatic rocky promontories, is one of the best sunset viewpoints in Thailand.

Phuket International Airport handles flights from major international hubs and from Bangkok year-round. The island's internal road network is supplemented by tuk-tuks, taxis, and ride-sharing apps. Ferries connect the island to Krabi, Koh Phi Phi, Koh Samui, and other destinations along the Andaman and Gulf coasts.

Phuket is a destination that succeeds in offering almost everything — natural beauty, cultural history, luxury, adventure, and a diverse tourist infrastructure — in one compact tropical island, making it one of the world's most complete beach resort destinations.
