Piazza Armerina is a historic hill town in the interior of Sicily, located in the Province of Enna in the geographic heart of the island. Situated on a series of wooded hills at an elevation of approximately 700 meters above sea level, the town is surrounded by the undulating agricultural landscape of central Sicily. Though modest in size, Piazza Armerina is one of the most visited destinations in all of Sicily, owing almost entirely to the presence of a nearby Roman villa that contains the most extensive and best-preserved ancient mosaics in the world.

The town has a permanent population of approximately 22,000 residents. Its economy and tourism sector are overwhelmingly oriented around the Villa Romana del Casale, a UNESCO World Heritage Site located about five kilometers outside the town. This late Roman country villa, dating from the late third or early fourth century AD and likely belonging to a member of the Roman imperial family, was buried by a landslide in the twelfth century and rediscovered and excavated in the twentieth century, emerging in a remarkable state of preservation.

The Villa Romana del Casale covers approximately 3,500 square meters and contains forty rooms decorated with extraordinarily vivid and complex polychrome floor mosaics. These mosaics, depicting hunting scenes, mythological subjects, circus performances, and daily life, represent the largest single collection of Roman mosaic art in existence. Among the most famous images are the "Bikini Girls," young women athletes shown competing in various sports wearing garments strikingly similar to modern bikinis, and the Great Hunt mosaic, an enormous 60-meter-long scene depicting the capture and transport of wild animals from Africa for Roman games.

The town of Piazza Armerina itself possesses considerable historical and architectural charm that is often overlooked by visitors rushing to and from the villa. The town developed primarily during the Norman period and expanded under Aragonese and Spanish rule. The historic center is dominated by the imposing baroque Cathedral, built in the seventeenth century and containing a venerated Byzantine icon of the Madonna della Vittoria. The Aragonese Castle and several aristocratic palaces from the sixteenth through eighteenth centuries line the narrow streets of the upper town, creating a handsome ensemble of southern Italian baroque architecture.

Piazza Armerina is also known for the Palio dei Normanni, a medieval pageant held each August in which the town's four districts compete in a jousting tournament on horseback, commemorating the Norman conquest of the town under Roger I in the eleventh century. This colorful event draws participants and spectators from across the island.

Transportation to Piazza Armerina requires a car or bus from Enna or Catania, as the town has no rail connection. The A19 motorway between Palermo and Catania provides the primary road access to the region.
