Pingdingshan

Pingdingshan is a prefecture-level city located in the central part of Henan Province in central China. With a population of approximately 5 million, the city is one of Henan's major urban centers and has historically been one of the most important coal mining and energy production centers in the province. The city takes its name from a flat-topped mountain (Pingding means flat mountain top) that rises within its territory.

Pingdingshan developed primarily as an industrial city following the establishment of the Pingdingshan Coal Mine in the 1950s, one of the largest coal mining operations in China. The coal industry shaped every aspect of the city's growth, population, and urban development during the Mao era and beyond. At its peak, the Pingdingshan Coal Mining Group was one of the largest coal enterprises in China and provided employment for hundreds of thousands of workers and their families.

Despite its industrial origins, Pingdingshan contains remarkable historical and cultural treasures. The most significant is the Daxianggu Temple (Great Fragrant Valley Temple) complex, home to the famous ruyi (royal scepter-shaped) corridor and beautiful Buddhist sculpture. The Jiaxian Clay Sculpture National Intangible Cultural Heritage, centered on the production of exquisite polychrome clay figures, represents one of the region's most celebrated folk art traditions. Jiaxian clay sculptures, depicting historical figures, mythological characters, and scenes from everyday life, have been produced in the area for centuries and are prized as gifts and collectibles throughout China.

The area around Pingdingshan is also of historical significance due to its location near Ying, the ancient capital of the Chu Kingdom during the Spring and Autumn period and Warring States period — one of the most powerful states of pre-imperial China. Archaeological finds from Chu sites in the region have yielded outstanding bronzes, lacquerwork, and silk textiles that are among the treasures of ancient Chinese art.

The Baiyunshan (White Cloud Mountain) scenic area, with its forested peaks and temples, and the Shimantan Reservoir surrounded by rolling hills and forests, offer natural retreats near the city. Local cuisine reflects Henan's central Chinese culinary traditions, with hand-pulled noodles, stewed dishes, and savory pancakes being staples.

As the coal industry contracts and China transitions toward cleaner energy, Pingdingshan has been investing in economic diversification, developing new industries in chemicals, machinery, and food processing. The city is connected by high-speed rail and expressways to Zhengzhou, Luoyang, and other cities in Henan. With its mix of coal industry heritage, outstanding folk art, ancient history, and natural scenery, Pingdingshan represents a compelling profile of China's industrial heartland in transition.
