Plymouth occupies a magnificent position on the south coast of Devon in south-west England, on the wide natural harbour of Plymouth Sound between the mouths of the rivers Plym and Tamar. With roughly two hundred and sixty-five thousand inhabitants it is the largest city in the region after Bristol, and it calls itself Britain's Ocean City, a claim its history amply supports.

Few places have sent so many ships into history. Sir Francis Drake sailed from Plymouth to circumnavigate the globe and, according to legend, finished a game of bowls on Plymouth Hoe before facing the Spanish Armada in 1588. The Pilgrims left from here in the Mayflower in 1620 to found their colony in New England, an event marked by the Mayflower Steps on the old Barbican quayside. Captain Cook departed on his first Pacific voyage in 1768, and the Beagle sailed with the young Charles Darwin aboard in 1831. The naval dockyard at Devonport, founded in 1690, remains the largest naval base in western Europe and continues to shape the city's economy and identity.

That naval importance came at a cost. The Plymouth Blitz of 1941 flattened the city centre, and Patrick Abercrombie's post-war plan replaced it with broad avenues and a grid of modernist blocks running from the railway station down to the sea, one of the most complete examples of post-war reconstruction planning in Britain and now increasingly appreciated as a period piece.

The Hoe, a grassy headland above the Sound, is the city's showpiece, crowned by Smeaton's Tower, the red and white eighteenth-century Eddystone lighthouse re-erected here stone by stone, with the seventeenth-century Royal Citadel alongside and the art deco Tinside Lido cut into the rocks below. The Barbican preserves cobbled Elizabethan streets, the Plymouth Gin distillery of 1793 and a working fish market. The National Marine Aquarium, the largest in the United Kingdom, faces it across the water, and The Box, a museum and gallery opened in 2020, has given the city a major new cultural venue alongside the Theatre Royal, one of the most productive regional theatres in the country. The Royal William Yard, a monumental Victorian naval victualling depot, is now full of restaurants, galleries and apartments.

Brunel's Royal Albert Bridge of 1859 carries the railway across the Tamar into Cornwall beside the modern road bridge, and trains run to London in around three hours. Ferries sail to France and Spain, and Dartmoor National Park begins only a few miles inland.

The University of Plymouth, with a strong reputation in marine science and a joint medical school, brings a large student population, and marine research, yacht building and defence engineering underpin the economy.

Sea views, maritime history and easy access to moor and coast make Plymouth a compelling destination.
