Pohang
Pohang is a major industrial and port city located on the southeastern coast of South Korea, in North Gyeongsang Province facing the East Sea (Sea of Japan). With a population of approximately 500,000 people, it is the largest city in North Gyeongsang Province and one of South Korea's most important industrial centers. The city is situated on a coastal plain with mountains to the west and the sea to the east, and its history has been shaped by the dual influences of traditional Korean culture and the massive steel industry that transformed it in the twentieth century.
Pohang's modern identity is inseparable from POSCO, the Pohang Iron and Steel Company, which was founded in 1968 as South Korea's first integrated steel producer. The construction of the POSCO steel mill in Pohang, completed in phases through the 1970s and 1980s, represented one of the most ambitious industrial development projects in South Korean history. At a time when South Korea was still a developing country, the establishment of a world-class steel plant in Pohang was a crucial step in the country's economic transformation, providing the materials needed for the shipbuilding, automotive, and construction industries that drove South Korea's economic miracle. POSCO grew to become one of the largest steel producers in the world, and the Pohang Works remains one of the most productive steel plants on Earth.
Beyond its industrial significance, Pohang is known for its beautiful coastline, sandy beaches, and scenic natural environment. Yeongil Bay provides calm waters and scenic waterfront areas, while the rugged coastline north and south of the city offers dramatic sea views. Homigot, located on a cape to the east of Pohang, is famous for hosting the national New Year's sunrise celebration, one of the largest of its kind in South Korea, where thousands gather to watch the first sunrise of the new year over the East Sea. A large bronze hand sculpture rising from the sea at Homigot has become one of South Korea's most iconic photographic landmarks.
Pohang is home to POSTECH, the Pohang University of Science and Technology, which was established by POSCO in 1986 and quickly became one of South Korea's and Asia's leading research universities. POSTECH's strong focus on science and engineering has made it a center of innovation and attracted high-caliber faculty and students from Korea and abroad. The university's presence has helped diversify the city's economic base beyond steel and has contributed to the development of research and technology enterprises in the region.
The city's cultural and tourism offer includes the Steelyard, a large sports and entertainment venue, and the POSCO History Museum documenting the extraordinary story of the company's development. The Guryongpo Japantown district preserves historical buildings from the Japanese colonial period when Guryongpo was a major fishing port. Fresh seafood, particularly the area's famous snow crab and raw fish, is a highlight of Pohang's culinary scene.
Pohang has good transportation connections, including a KTX high-speed rail link to Seoul and Busan, making it readily accessible. The city's combination of industrial power, coastal scenery, academic excellence, and cultural heritage makes it one of the most multidimensional and interesting cities on South Korea's eastern coast.
