Pollença
Pollença is a historic town situated in the northeastern corner of the island of Mallorca in the Balearic Islands, Spain. With a population of approximately 16,000 inhabitants, the municipality encompasses both the inland town of Pollença itself and the coastal resort of Port de Pollença on the shores of a beautiful bay sheltered between two peninsulas. Pollença has long attracted artists, writers, and intellectuals drawn by its serene beauty, traditional Mallorcan character, and the exceptional quality of light that illuminates its ancient stone streets and surrounding limestone mountains.
The historic center of Pollença is built around the Plaça Major, a large square shaded by plane trees and lined with cafes and restaurants that is the social heart of the community. On Sunday mornings, the square hosts one of the finest artisan markets in Mallorca, where local craftspeople, farmers, and food producers gather in a tradition that has continued for centuries. The narrow streets radiating from the square are lined with traditional Mallorcan stone houses, many converted into boutique hotels, galleries, and artisan workshops.
The most famous and photographed feature of Pollença is the Calvari (Calvary), a monumental staircase of 365 steps that climbs steeply from the center of town to a small chapel at the summit. The steps are flanked by cypress trees and stations of the cross, creating a dramatically atmospheric ascent rewarded by panoramic views over the town, the surrounding mountains of the Serra de Tramuntana, and the bay. The Good Friday procession up the Calvari is one of the most moving and solemn events in the Mallorcan religious calendar.
Pollença has a distinguished history as an artists' colony. The Mallorcan Painters' School flourished here in the early 20th century, and the town's beautiful light, traditional architecture, and Mediterranean landscape continue to inspire contemporary artists. The Municipal Museum of Pollença, housed in a former Dominican convent on the Plaça Major, displays works by local and international artists who have been connected to the town, including pieces by the English sculptor and collector William Waldren and works associated with the Pollença art scene.
Port de Pollença, connected to the town by a road through olive and almond groves, is one of the most family-friendly and aesthetically pleasing resorts in Mallorca. The bay, protected by the Cap de Formentor peninsula to the north and the Alcúdia peninsula to the south, offers calm, shallow, clear water ideal for sailing, windsurfing, and kayaking. The pine-shaded promenade (passeig) along the waterfront is one of the most pleasant beach promenades in the Balearic Islands.
Each August, Pollença hosts the Festival de Pollença, one of the oldest and most prestigious classical music festivals in Spain, drawing world-class soloists, ensembles, and orchestras to perform in the magnificent setting of the cloister of the former Dominican convent. The festival has featured performances by some of the greatest musicians of the 20th and 21st centuries.
Pollença represents Mallorca at its most authentic and beautiful: a place where traditional island culture, artistic heritage, natural splendor, and gracious hospitality combine to create an experience of enduring quality and charm.
