Poltava

Poltava lies in central Ukraine on the Vorskla River, roughly midway between Kyiv and Kharkiv, in a landscape of gently rolling black earth country, orchards and wooded river valleys. The climate is temperate continental, with cold snowy winters, warm summers and a long growing season on some of the most fertile soil in Europe.

About two hundred and eighty thousand people live in the city, which is the capital of Poltava Oblast. Its economy has been based on food processing, engineering, textiles and the extraction of natural gas and iron ore in the surrounding region, while the countryside produces grain, sunflowers and sugar beet in abundance.

Poltava is first mentioned in the twelfth century, but it entered world history in 1709, when the armies of Peter I of Russia defeated Charles XII of Sweden and his Ukrainian ally Hetman Ivan Mazepa in a battle fought on the fields just north of the town. The engagement ended Sweden's period as a great power and reshaped the political map of eastern Europe. The battlefield is preserved as a memorial reserve with a museum, monuments and the Swedish and Russian graves, and it remains one of the most visited historical sites in the country.

The city centre is one of the finest neoclassical ensembles in Ukraine. Round Square, laid out in the early nineteenth century, is a large circle of government buildings surrounding the Column of Glory, and the radiating streets that lead from it retain their period character. The baroque Exaltation of the Cross Monastery on a hill above the river, the Assumption Cathedral and the striking Poltava Regional Museum, built in the Ukrainian Modernist style by the architect Vasyl Krychevsky, are among the most important buildings.

Poltava occupies a central place in Ukrainian culture. The local dialect formed the basis of the modern literary language, and Ivan Kotliarevsky, who published the first work in that language in 1798, was born and buried here; his cottage is preserved as a museum. Nikolai Gogol grew up in the province, and the villages he immortalised, including Dykanka and the fair at Sorochyntsi, lie nearby, the latter hosting an enormous annual folk market that has become a national institution. The city is also famous for its embroidery, its pottery at nearby Opishnia and its dumplings, celebrated by a monument to the galushka.

Like other Ukrainian cities, Poltava has been affected by the war that began in 2022, suffering missile strikes and receiving large numbers of displaced people, while continuing to function as a regional centre.

Transport includes two railway stations on the lines between Kyiv and Kharkiv, a highway that forms part of the main east west route across the country, and a network of buses and trolleybuses within the city.

Higher education is well developed, with a national polytechnic university, a medical university, an agrarian university and pedagogical institutes.

Poltava is important as a cradle of the modern Ukrainian language, as the site of a battle that changed Europe and as a graceful provincial capital in the heart of the country.
