Pontianak

Pontianak is the capital city of West Kalimantan Province on the island of Borneo in Indonesia. It sits almost exactly on the equator — the zero-degree latitude line passes directly through the city, making it one of the few capital cities in the world to straddle this geographic boundary. With a population of approximately 700,000 people, Pontianak is the largest city in Borneo and a vital commercial and administrative center for the western portion of the island.

The city was founded in 1771 by Syarif Abdurrahman Alkadrie, an Arab-Malay noble who established a sultanate at the confluence of the Kapuas and Landak rivers. The name Pontianak is derived from a supernatural figure in Malay folklore, reflecting the mystical and diverse cultural traditions that have shaped the region. The Kadriah Palace, the historic residence of the sultanate, still stands today as a symbol of the city's royal heritage and is open to visitors.

The Equator Monument, known locally as Tugu Khatulistiwa, is Pontianak's most iconic attraction. Located a short distance north of the city center, it marks the exact position of the equator and is the site of special ceremonies twice a year when the sun passes directly overhead, causing objects to cast no shadow — a remarkable natural phenomenon known as the solar zenith.

The Kapuas River, one of the longest rivers in Indonesia, runs through the heart of Pontianak and defines much of the city's identity. Traditional stilt houses line the riverbanks, and boat traffic on the Kapuas has long been central to the local economy and daily life. River transport remains important for connecting Pontianak to communities in the interior of Kalimantan.

Pontianak has a diverse population that includes Malay, Dayak, Hakka Chinese, and Javanese communities, creating a rich multicultural environment. This diversity is reflected in the city's religious landscape — mosques, Chinese temples, and churches stand in close proximity throughout the city. The Chinese community has had a particularly strong influence on local commerce and cuisine, and Pontianak is well-known for its distinctive food culture, including its celebrated kwe kia tiaw noodle soup and various sweet snacks.

The city's infrastructure has developed rapidly in recent years, with improvements to its main roads, the expansion of Supadio International Airport, and investment in public services. The airport connects Pontianak to major Indonesian cities and several international destinations.

Tanjungpura University is the principal higher education institution in Pontianak, training students in a wide range of disciplines and contributing to the city's growing professional class.

Pontianak occupies a unique place on the map — literally at the center of the world — and its blend of equatorial geography, multicultural heritage, and river-based lifestyle makes it a fascinating city that rewards curious visitors willing to venture beyond Indonesia's more famous destinations.
