Port-de-Paix lies on the northwestern coast of Haiti, facing the Atlantic across a narrow channel from the island of Tortuga. Green mountains rise steeply behind the town, and the Trois Rivières empties into the sea just to the east, watering a fertile coastal plain. The climate is hot and tropical, tempered by sea breezes, with a rainy season in spring and autumn and a hurricane risk in late summer.

The city is the capital of the Nord-Ouest department and, together with its surrounding commune, is home to well over two hundred thousand people. It is the principal urban centre and port of a region that has long been among the most isolated in the country, separated from the rest of Haiti by rugged terrain and difficult roads.

Its history is closely tied to the island opposite. In the seventeenth century Tortuga was the base of the buccaneers who preyed on Spanish shipping, and when French settlers moved across to the mainland they founded Port-de-Paix in 1665, making it one of the earliest French towns on the island and briefly the capital of the colony that would become Saint-Domingue. The name, meaning port of peace, marked the hope of settling down after decades of raiding. Sugar, coffee and cotton plantations spread across the surrounding valleys, worked by enslaved Africans, until the revolution that created independent Haiti in 1804. The northwest played its part in that struggle, and the region has kept a strong sense of local identity ever since.

Little colonial architecture survives, but the town retains a distinctive character, with a lively waterfront, a busy market and streets that climb the slopes above the bay. Boats leave regularly for Tortuga, where visitors can see caves, beaches and the remains of the fortress that once guarded the pirate stronghold, a place that still fascinates travellers drawn by its legends. The coastline nearby includes quiet beaches and fishing villages, and the interior offers waterfalls and mountain scenery for those willing to travel rough roads.

Cultural life is rich in the Haitian tradition. Kompa and rara music fill the streets during festivals, carnival is celebrated with energy, and the patron saint festival brings processions and dancing. Creole is the everyday language alongside French, and local cuisine features rice and beans, griot, fried plantains and abundant seafood. Vodou practices coexist with Catholic and Protestant worship, as they do throughout the country.

The economy depends on agriculture, particularly bananas, coffee, mangoes and root crops, along with fishing, small trade and money sent home by relatives abroad, since the northwest has seen heavy emigration. The port handles coastal shipping, a small airport offers flights toward the capital, and improvements to the road linking the city with Gonaïves and Cap-Haïtien have gradually reduced its isolation. A public university campus serves students who previously had to leave the region entirely.

Port-de-Paix matters as one of the oldest towns in Haiti, the gateway to Tortuga and the heart of a resilient and distinctive corner of the country.
