Port Elizabeth, officially known as Gqeberha since 2021 — named after the Gqeberha River using the Xhosa language name — is a major city and seaport located on Algoa Bay on the southeastern coast of South Africa in the Eastern Cape Province. With a metropolitan population of approximately 1.3 million people, it is one of South Africa's largest cities and serves as an important automotive manufacturing hub, commercial port, and tourism destination. The area around what is now Port Elizabeth has been inhabited by the Khoikhoi and later by Xhosa-speaking peoples for thousands of years.
