Port Elizabeth
Port Elizabeth, officially known as Gqeberha since 2021 — named after the Gqeberha River using the Xhosa language name — is a major city and seaport located on Algoa Bay on the southeastern coast of South Africa in the Eastern Cape Province. With a metropolitan population of approximately 1.3 million people, it is one of South Africa's largest cities and serves as an important automotive manufacturing hub, commercial port, and tourism destination. The city's warm Indian Ocean waters, beautiful beaches, and proximity to wildlife reserves make it one of South Africa's most appealing coastal destinations.
The area around what is now Port Elizabeth has been inhabited by the Khoikhoi and later by Xhosa-speaking peoples for thousands of years. The city was formally established by the British colonial government in 1820 when a large group of British settlers landed at Algoa Bay and settled the region. Governor Rufane Donkin named the settlement Port Elizabeth in memory of his late wife. The arrival of these British settlers established the city as a predominantly English-speaking community within South Africa, a characteristic that persisted through much of the 20th century.
Port Elizabeth is the heart of South Africa's automotive industry, hosting major manufacturing plants for companies including Volkswagen, General Motors, and Ford, along with extensive networks of component suppliers. The automotive sector makes the city one of the most industrially significant in South Africa outside the Gauteng region. The Port of Ngqura, completed in 2009 near Port Elizabeth, is South Africa's newest deep-water container port and one of the country's most important maritime logistics facilities.
The city's coastline is one of its greatest assets. Hobie Beach in the Summerstrand district is a popular swimming and water sports beach with consistent warm waters and gentle swells. The nearby Sardinia Bay and Schoenmakerskop offer wilder, more dramatic coastal scenery. The Boardwalk entertainment complex along the beachfront provides restaurants, a casino, and entertainment facilities. St. Croix Island, visible from the shore, is home to Africa's largest colony of African penguins, which can be observed on boat tours from the harbor.
The greater Port Elizabeth area is surrounded by important wildlife destinations. The Addo Elephant National Park, located just 70 kilometers north of the city, protects one of the largest elephant populations in South Africa and is home to lion, rhino, buffalo, leopard, and hundreds of bird species, making it one of the finest Big Five game reserves in the country. Several smaller private game reserves in the surrounding Cacadu region offer malaria-free safari experiences within easy reach of the city.
Nelson Mandela University, named after South Africa's most revered statesman, is the city's primary university and one of South Africa's comprehensive universities, offering programs across many disciplines. The city's cultural landscape includes museums, theatres, and galleries celebrating both its colonial heritage and the rich Xhosa traditions of the Eastern Cape.
Port Elizabeth's combination of industrial importance, natural beauty, wildlife access, and warm coastal climate makes it one of South Africa's most versatile and rewarding cities, equally suited for business travel, beach holidays, and safari adventures.
