Portimão is a city and municipality in the western Algarve region of southern Portugal, situated on the north bank of the Arade River estuary near its mouth on the Atlantic coast. As the second-largest city in the Algarve and a major commercial and tourist center, Portimão combines a busy working port, a vibrant city center, and immediate access to some of the finest beaches in Portugal.

The municipality has a population of approximately 60,000 and is one of the most economically active areas of the Algarve region. While tourism has become a dominant industry, Portimão has historically been an important fishing port, and the sardine canning industry that flourished here in the 20th century still forms part of its identity. The waterfront area around the Museu de Portimão, housed in a superbly restored former canning factory, testifies to this industrial heritage.

Portimão's most celebrated natural asset is Praia de Rocha, a wide beach of golden sand backed by dramatic ochre cliffs just south of the city center. One of the most famous beaches in Portugal, it is lined with hotels, restaurants, and bars and retains some fine examples of early 20th-century villa architecture. Praia dos Três Castelos and Praia do Vau are quieter alternatives nearby. Boat trips explore the sea grottos and rock formations of the coast, and water sports facilities are widely available.

The Autódromo Internacional do Algarve, located near Portimão, is a world-class motorsport circuit that has hosted Formula 1, MotoGP, and World Superbike Championship events, raising the city's profile internationally. The waterfront marina attracts international yachts and serves as a starting point for boat excursions and deep-sea fishing trips. Sardine grilling on the waterfront is a beloved summer tradition, and the city's restaurants are known for their fresh fish and regional Algarve cuisine.

Portimão is served by the A22 Via do Infante motorway, and Faro Airport is approximately 65 kilometers to the east. Rail services connect the city to Faro (about one hour) and to Lagos to the west. Local buses provide connections within the municipality and to neighboring towns.
