Porto

Porto is Portugal's second-largest city and the capital of the Norte Region, situated at the mouth of the Douro River on the country's northern Atlantic coast. A city of extraordinary beauty, character, and gastronomic richness, Porto has become one of Europe's most celebrated travel destinations, repeatedly named Europe's Best Destination by the World Travel Awards and drawing millions of visitors each year to its hillside neighborhoods, Gothic towers, and vine-covered wine lodges.

With a population of approximately 240,000 in the city and over 1.7 million in the greater Porto metropolitan area, the city is the economic powerhouse of northern Portugal. Its port wine industry, centered across the Douro in the Vila Nova de Gaia district, has shaped both the city's economy and its international reputation for centuries. Porto gave its name not only to the wine but also to Portugal itself — Portus Cale (the Port of Cale) being the Latin name for the region that became the origin of the Portuguese state.

Porto's historic center is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, a hillside labyrinth of medieval alleys, Baroque churches, and azulejo-covered facades descending to the Ribeira waterfront. The Sé Cathedral, a Romanesque fortress-church begun in the 12th century, towers above the city. The São Bento Railway Station, clad internally in 20,000 blue-and-white azulejo tiles depicting scenes of Portuguese history, is one of the most stunning railway stations in the world. The stock exchange building, known as the Palácio da Bolsa, contains the extraordinary Arabian Hall, a gilded Moorish revival interior that is one of Portugal's finest 19th-century interiors.

The city's literary and cultural identity is strong. The Livraria Lello, a Gothic-revival bookshop dating from 1906 and said to have inspired J.K. Rowling's Diagon Alley, is among the most beautiful bookshops in the world. The Serralves Museum of Contemporary Art, set in a Art Deco villa surrounded by magnificent gardens, is a major institution for modern and contemporary art. The Casa da Música, designed by Rem Koolhaas and opened in 2005, is an architectural landmark and the home of the Porto Philharmonic Orchestra.

Porto's food and drink culture is central to any visit. The city is famous for the francesinha, a hearty layered sandwich smothered in a spiced tomato and beer sauce, and for its bacalhau (salted cod) preparations. Vila Nova de Gaia hosts the cellars of the great port wine houses — Taylor's, Graham's, Sandeman, and others — where visitors can tour, taste, and learn about the wine that bears the city's name. The Ribeira and Foz districts are lined with excellent restaurants and cafés.

Porto Airport Francisco Sá Carneiro is one of Portugal's busiest airports, with connections to major European and international destinations. The Metro do Porto provides efficient light rail transport throughout the city and to the airport. The historic trams, though now largely tourist attractions, add to the city's atmospheric street life.

Porto is a city that rewards exploration at every turn, offering layers of history, beauty, gastronomy, and genuine urban character that few European cities can match.
