Prayagraj

Prayagraj, formerly known as Allahabad, is one of the most sacred cities in Hinduism, located in the state of Uttar Pradesh in northern India at the confluence of three rivers: the Ganges, the Yamuna, and the mythical Saraswati, which is believed to flow underground. This sacred meeting point of rivers, known as the Triveni Sangam, has made Prayagraj one of the holiest pilgrimage sites in the world and the host of the Kumbh Mela, the largest peaceful gathering of human beings on earth. The city has a population of approximately 1.5 million people and serves as an important administrative and educational center in Uttar Pradesh.

The confluence at Prayagraj has been considered sacred for thousands of years, with ancient Hindu scriptures describing it as the king of all pilgrimage sites. The Kumbh Mela, held here every twelve years along with smaller Ardh Kumbh Mela events every six years, draws tens of millions of Hindu pilgrims who come to bathe at the Sangam in the belief that doing so will cleanse them of sins and help them attain moksha, or liberation from the cycle of rebirth. The 2019 Prayagraj Kumbh Mela was attended by an estimated 240 million people over its duration, making it the largest gathering in recorded human history.

The Allahabad Fort, built by the Mughal Emperor Akbar in 1583 on the banks of the Yamuna, is one of Prayagraj's most significant historical monuments. Located within the fort's precincts is the famous Ashoka Pillar, a polished sandstone column dating to the 3rd century BCE that bears inscriptions by Emperor Ashoka along with later additions by Mughal emperors. The Anand Bhavan, the historic family home of the Nehru family, is preserved as a museum dedicated to the independence movement and the Nehru-Gandhi political dynasty. Jawaharlal Nehru, India's first Prime Minister, was born in Allahabad.

Prayagraj has been an important center of education and intellectual life in India. The University of Allahabad, established in 1887, is one of India's oldest and most prestigious universities, historically nicknamed the Oxford of the East for the quality of its education and the influence of its alumni. The Motilal Nehru National Institute of Technology is another important technical institution in the city.

The city's economy includes government services, education, trade, and a growing logistics sector. Prayagraj serves as an administrative headquarters for several regional government functions in Uttar Pradesh, including the Allahabad High Court, which is one of the largest high courts in India by number of judges.

The Sangam area and the Hanuman Temple at Daraganj are popular religious sites beyond the fort, while the old city bazaars offer traditional shopping experiences in textiles, brass items, and sweets. The city's flat Gangetic landscape, pleasant winters, and deep historical associations with both ancient Hindu tradition and modern Indian history give it a layered identity that continues to attract pilgrims, historians, and curious visitors alike.

Prayagraj stands as a city where the mythological and the historical merge at the river's edge, a place of immense spiritual importance whose significance has drawn humanity together in extraordinary numbers across the millennia.
