Ptuj

Ptuj is the oldest city in Slovenia, with a history of continuous settlement spanning more than two thousand years. Located in the northeastern part of the country along the Drava River, about 25 kilometers southeast of Maribor, this compact town of approximately 18,000 inhabitants is one of the most historically rich and visually captivating destinations in the entire country. Its remarkably preserved old town, dominated by a medieval castle rising above the river, immediately evokes a sense of stepping back in time.

The city's roots lie in the Roman period, when it was known as Poetovio and served as one of the most important Roman administrative and military centers in the Pannonian region. At its height, Roman Ptuj was home to several legions and a significant civilian population. Extensive archaeological finds from this era, including temples, mosaics, and numerous Mithraic shrines, testify to its former importance. The Ptuj Regional Museum, housed within the castle, holds one of the finest collections of Roman artifacts in Slovenia.

Ptuj Castle, perched on a prominent hill above the old town, is the crown jewel of the city's heritage. The castle has been rebuilt and expanded over many centuries, incorporating Romanesque, Gothic, and Renaissance elements, and today houses a remarkable collection of weapons, furniture, musical instruments, and artworks. The views from the castle over the terracotta rooftops of the old town and the Drava River below are among the most picturesque in Slovenia.

Perhaps Ptuj's most internationally celebrated tradition is the Kurentovanje carnival, one of the oldest and most spectacular folk festivals in Slovenia and recognized on UNESCO's list of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. Held in the days leading up to Lent, the festival features the Kurent, a mythological figure dressed in sheepskin with a horned mask and colorful ribbons, who dances through the streets in a ritual designed to drive away winter and evil spirits. The festival draws tens of thousands of visitors from across Europe each February.

The city's old town is a delight to explore on foot. The medieval streets are lined with burgher houses, Gothic porticoes, churches, and the remains of Roman-era structures. The Church of St George, the Dominican monastery, and the Minorite monastery add to the architectural richness of the center. The Drava embankment offers lovely promenades and views of the castle reflection in the river.

The surrounding region is renowned for wine production, particularly the Haloze and Jeruzalem wine districts, which produce excellent white wines from grape varieties such as Šipon, Laški Riesling, and Traminac. Several thermal spas, including the well-known Terme Ptuj, are located in the immediate vicinity, making Ptuj an excellent base for combining cultural exploration with wellness and relaxation. Its unique character and depth of heritage make Ptuj a genuinely unforgettable Slovenian destination.
