Purnia
Purnia stands in the eastern part of the Indian state of Bihar, on the fertile plain between the Kosi and Mahananda rivers, not far from the borders of West Bengal and Nepal. The Saura River flows through the city, and the surrounding countryside is flat, green and heavily cultivated, soaked each summer by a powerful monsoon that gives the district one of the highest rainfall totals in the state. The Himalayas of eastern Nepal are visible on clear winter mornings.
Around three hundred and fifty thousand people live in the city, which serves as the headquarters of Purnia district and of a division covering several neighbouring districts. It is the commercial capital of the region often called Seemanchal, and its markets handle enormous quantities of maize, jute, bananas, makhana or fox nuts, rice and vegetables. Purnia is one of the largest maize trading centres in India, and processing units, cold stores and transport businesses have grown up around this trade.
The name is usually traced to Purnaranya, meaning complete forest, a reminder that the district was once thickly wooded and sparsely settled. Local tradition also links it to the temple of Puran Devi, a shrine of great antiquity that still attracts pilgrims. The area passed through the hands of regional dynasties and later the Mughals, who used it as a frontier district facing the hills. The British established Purnia as an administrative district in 1770, one of the earliest in Bihar, and built the courts, offices and indigo and jute enterprises that shaped the modern town.
Visitors to Purnia usually see the Puran Devi temple, believed by devotees to be one of the sacred sites associated with the goddess, and the older colonial-era public buildings around the courts. Rangbhumi Maidan, a large open ground in the centre, hosts fairs, political gatherings and cricket. The riverside areas, the busy bazaars of Bhatta Bazar and Gulabbagh, one of the biggest agricultural markets in eastern India, show the working life of the city. Excursions lead to the wetlands and bird habitats of the Kosi floodplain and to the Buddhist and Hindu sites of northern Bihar.
Purnia is notably diverse. Hindi, Urdu, Maithili, Surjapuri and Bengali are all spoken, and Hindu and Muslim communities live side by side, celebrating Durga Puja, Chhath, Eid and Muharram with equal energy. The cuisine reflects this mixture, with litti chokha, fish curries, makhana kheer and sweets such as khaja and thekua.
The city lies on National Highway 27 and has an important railway junction with services to Patna, Kolkata, Delhi and Guwahati. Purnia airport began scheduled passenger flights recently, greatly improving links to the rest of the country. Purnea College, an agricultural university campus, engineering and medical colleges serve students from across the region.
Purnia matters as the gateway and economic engine of a rapidly developing corner of eastern India.
