Pushkar is a small but profoundly sacred town located in the Ajmer district of Rajasthan, northwestern India, approximately 15 kilometers northwest of the city of Ajmer. Cradled in a natural hollow surrounded by low Aravalli hills and centered on the holy Pushkar Lake, the town has a population of around 20,000 permanent residents, though it swells dramatically during major religious festivals. Pushkar is one of the holiest pilgrimage sites in Hinduism and holds a unique place in the religious geography of India.

According to Hindu mythology, Pushkar was created when the lotus flower dropped by the creator-god Brahma fell to earth at this spot, causing a lake to appear. This legend gives Pushkar its extraordinary religious significance — it is home to the Brahma Temple, one of the very few temples in the world dedicated to the creator-deity Brahma, who is otherwise seldom worshipped with his own dedicated shrine. The temple, constructed in the 14th century and later rebuilt, is a major pilgrimage destination, particularly for devout Hindus.

The Pushkar Lake itself, known as the Pushkar Sarovar, is ringed by 52 ghats — stone steps descending to the sacred water — along which pilgrims bathe, offer prayers, and perform rituals. The atmosphere along the ghats is one of the most serene and spiritually charged in India, especially at dawn and dusk when lamps are floated on the water during the evening aarti ceremony.

Pushkar is internationally renowned for the Pushkar Camel Fair, held annually in November during the auspicious days of the Kartik Purnima full moon. This extraordinary event draws hundreds of thousands of visitors, including traders, pilgrims, tourists, and journalists from around the world. Tens of thousands of camels, horses, and livestock are brought for trading, while the fairgrounds erupt with folk music, acrobats, musicians, camel races, and handicraft markets. The fair represents one of the largest livestock markets in Asia and one of the most photogenic events on the global festival calendar.

The streets of Pushkar are lined with ashrams, temples, small guesthouses, and bazaars selling traditional Rajasthani textiles, jewelry, and handicrafts. The town has a distinctly bohemian character, attracting a large number of international backpackers and spiritual seekers who are drawn by its relaxed pace of life and its atmosphere of gentle devotion. Alcohol and meat are prohibited within the town limits in deference to its sacred status, making it one of the few towns in Rajasthan with this distinction.

The surrounding desert landscape, dotted with rocky hills and sand dunes, is ideal for camel safaris, sunrise and sunset walks, and photography. The Rose Garden of Pushkar is famous for producing roses that are used to make rose essence, an important local agricultural product.

Pushkar is well connected to Ajmer by regular bus services, and Ajmer has rail connections to Jaipur, Delhi, and other major Indian cities. Jaipur International Airport, approximately 145 kilometers away, is the nearest major air hub.
