Qarchak

Qarchak lies on the southern edge of the Tehran metropolitan area, on the flat, dry plain of Varamin about thirty-five kilometres from the centre of the Iranian capital. The city sits at around nine hundred metres above sea level, with the Alborz mountains visible on the northern horizon and the salt desert of the central plateau beginning not far to the south. The climate is semi-arid, with hot summers, cold winters and very little rainfall outside the cooler months.

Around a quarter of a million people live here, making Qarchak one of the largest satellite cities in Tehran province. Its growth has been extraordinarily rapid. In the middle of the twentieth century it was a cluster of villages surrounded by irrigated fields; today it is a densely built city that was raised to the status of a separate county in 2012, having previously been governed as part of neighbouring Varamin.

That expansion was driven by migration. Families arriving from Azerbaijani-speaking provinces in the north-west, from Khorasan, Lorestan, Sistan and elsewhere settled here in search of work in the capital, drawn by housing far cheaper than in Tehran itself. The result is a young, mixed and hard-working population in which several languages and regional traditions live side by side, and a city that functions largely as a residential and industrial base for the wider metropolitan region.

The local economy combines manufacturing and agriculture. Workshops and factories on the outskirts produce textiles, plastics, food products, building materials and machine parts, while the Varamin plain around the city remains an important farming district supplying Tehran with vegetables, melons, wheat and dairy produce. Many residents commute daily into the capital for work in construction, transport and services.

Qarchak itself is a modern city without ancient monuments, but its surroundings are rich in heritage. The neighbouring town of Varamin preserves the Jameh Mosque of 1322, one of the masterpieces of Ilkhanid architecture with its magnificent stucco mihrab and tiled dome, along with the tomb tower of Ala al-Din and the shrine of Yahya. The ruins of the ancient city of Rey and the great salt lake of Hoz-e Soltan are also within reach, and the mountain valleys north of Tehran are a favourite weekend escape.

Daily life centres on busy bazaars, bakeries, tea houses and mosques, and religious observances such as the Muharram processions are marked with particular intensity. Parks and sports halls built in recent years have given the growing population more public space.

Highways to Tehran and Varamin carry constant bus and shared-taxi traffic, the southern railway line to Mashhad and the south passes close by, and the extension of Tehran's metro network towards the southern suburbs has improved connections to the capital. Branches of Payame Noor and Islamic Azad universities and a number of technical institutes serve local students.

Qarchak is significant as an example of how Tehran has grown beyond its own boundaries, absorbing farmland into a busy, diverse and youthful working city.
