Quận Mười Một
Quận Mười Một, known in English as District 11, is one of the inner urban districts of Ho Chi Minh City, the largest metropolis in Vietnam. It lies west of the historic centre, bordered by District 5, District 6, Tân Bình and Tân Phú, in the belt of neighbourhoods that grew up around the old Chinese quarter of Chợ Lớn. Covering only about five square kilometres, it is one of the smaller districts of the city but also among the most densely populated, with narrow lanes, workshops, temples and markets packed tightly together.
Roughly two hundred thousand people live here, a large proportion of them Hoa, the Vietnamese of Chinese descent whose ancestors settled in Chợ Lớn from the eighteenth century onwards. Their presence gives the district a distinctive character, visible in the Cantonese and Teochew heard in the markets, in the clan halls and assembly houses, and in the food stalls selling noodle soups, roast meats and herbal teas. District 11 has long been a centre of small-scale manufacturing and trade, particularly in plastics, garments, food processing and traditional medicine.
The area developed as Saigon and Chợ Lớn expanded towards each other during the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, eventually merging into a single city. District 11 in its present form was created in 1969, and it grew rapidly in the following decades as migrants arrived from the countryside. Since the economic reforms of the late 1980s, family businesses and workshops have multiplied, and newer apartment blocks now rise beside older shophouses.
The district's best known attraction is Đầm Sen Cultural Park, a large amusement and water park built around a lotus lake, with gardens, rides, aquariums and evening light shows that draw families from across the city. Nearby stands the Phú Thọ Racecourse, historically the only horse racing track in Vietnam, and the Phú Thọ Indoor Stadium, a major venue for basketball, volleyball and concerts. Giác Viên Pagoda, hidden away near the park, is one of the oldest surviving temples in Ho Chi Minh City, its dim interior filled with more than a hundred carved wooden statues, while Chinese assembly halls and small Buddhist and Taoist shrines are scattered through the streets.
Daily life here is intensely local. Wet markets open before dawn, motorbikes fill every lane, and pavement cafés and street kitchens serve food from early morning until late at night. Lunar New Year and the Mid-Autumn Festival are celebrated with particular energy in the Chinese-Vietnamese community, with lion dances, lanterns and special cakes.
The district is well connected by a dense bus network and by major roads such as Đường 3 Tháng 2 and Lạc Long Quân, and the expanding metro system is gradually improving links across the city. Tân Sơn Nhất International Airport is only a few kilometres to the north. Several universities, colleges and vocational schools, along with hospitals serving the western districts, are located in or near the area.
District 11 offers visitors an unpolished, everyday version of Ho Chi Minh City, where Chinese-Vietnamese heritage, street food, old pagodas and modern family entertainment coexist within a few crowded blocks.
