Quận Mười
Quận Mười, known in English as District 10, is an urban district located in Ho Chi Minh City (formerly Saigon), the largest city and economic capital of Vietnam. Situated in the western part of the city's inner urban area, District 10 is a densely populated residential and commercial neighborhood that forms an integral part of Vietnam's most dynamic metropolis. With a population of approximately 230,000 people in a relatively compact area, it is one of the most densely populated districts of Ho Chi Minh City.
The area that forms modern District 10 has been part of the urban fabric of Saigon since the French colonial period in the 19th and 20th centuries, when the city was developed as the capital of French Cochinchina and later South Vietnam. The district as it exists today was established as an administrative unit following the reunification of Vietnam in 1975 and the reorganization of Ho Chi Minh City's administrative structure. Over the decades, District 10 has evolved from a relatively quiet residential area into a vibrant, densely built neighborhood with a strong local commercial character.
District 10 is known within Ho Chi Minh City for its significant Chinese-Vietnamese community, which has contributed to the district's commercial culture, cuisine, and architecture. The area around Lý Thường Kiệt and surrounding streets is home to Chinese-Vietnamese businesses, restaurants serving Cantonese and Teochew cuisine, herbal medicine shops, and Buddhist and Taoist temples that add a distinctive character to the neighborhood. This cultural presence gives District 10 an atmosphere that blends Vietnamese urban life with Chinese community traditions.
Among the notable cultural and religious sites in District 10 are several Buddhist temples and pagodas, including the Minh Hương Gia Thạnh temple complex that reflects the historical Chinese community's spiritual heritage. The Lê Thị Riêng Park and Tao Dan Park, the latter being just outside the district's boundaries, provide green spaces where residents practice morning exercises, walk, and socialize in the tropical heat. The Vuon Tau cultural park and various community cultural centers host events including traditional performances and local festivals.
The culinary scene in District 10 is a particular draw. The district's streets are lined with pho restaurants, banh mi stalls, com tam (broken rice) eateries, and Chinese-Vietnamese specialty restaurants. The local wet market is a sensory experience of fresh produce, seafood, and prepared foods that forms the backbone of daily domestic life. Street food is abundant, with vendors offering an extraordinary variety of Vietnamese and Chinese-influenced snacks at all hours of the day and night.
Transportation in District 10 is integrated into Ho Chi Minh City's bus network, with numerous routes passing through the district. The expanding Ho Chi Minh City Metro system is gradually improving public transportation options for the city as a whole. Motorbikes remain the dominant mode of individual transport, as throughout Ho Chi Minh City, and the streets of District 10 reflect the organized chaos of Vietnamese urban traffic at its most characteristic.
Education is well represented in District 10, with the Ho Chi Minh City University of Medicine and Pharmacy, one of Vietnam's leading medical universities, located within the district. This major institution attracts students from across the country and contributes to the district's profile as a center of professional education. Several secondary schools and kindergartens serve the local residential community.
District 10 is a neighborhood that captures the essence of everyday urban Vietnamese life in one of Southeast Asia's most energetic cities. Its Chinese-Vietnamese heritage, excellent street food, religious temples, and educational institutions make it a fascinating district for those who want to experience Ho Chi Minh City beyond its more tourist-oriented areas, and a comfortable, well-connected home for the diverse community that lives there.
