Quận Sáu

Quan Sau, known in English as District 6, lies in the western part of Ho Chi Minh City, the largest urban centre in Vietnam. It occupies flat, low lying ground crossed by canals that once carried rice barges up from the Mekong Delta into the heart of the city, and it forms part of the historic area known as Cho Lon, the great Chinese quarter of southern Vietnam. The streets here are dense and constantly busy, lined with shophouses, workshops and warehouses.

Around a quarter of a million people live in the district. Its importance is commercial rather than political, because this is one of the main wholesale trading zones of the city, supplying dried goods, fabric, plastics, medicines and food to markets across the south. A large community of Vietnamese of Chinese descent has lived here for generations, and their family firms, guild halls and temples still shape daily life.

Cho Lon grew from the late eighteenth century, when Chinese merchants who had settled further east moved to this stretch of the canals and built a trading town that soon rivalled Saigon itself. The two settlements expanded until they eventually merged in the twentieth century. Rice milling, textiles and the export trade made the quarter wealthy, and the French colonial administration laid out boulevards and waterways to serve it. War, migration and economic reform have all left their mark, and since the 1990s the district has industrialised further while keeping its distinctive character.

The best known landmark is Binh Tay Market, a splendid building from the late 1920s financed by a Chinese merchant, arranged around a central courtyard with a clock tower and sweeping tiled roofs. It remains one of the busiest wholesale markets in the country. Nearby are ornate assembly halls and temples dedicated to Thien Hau and other deities, filled with hanging incense coils, carved woodwork and ceramic roof figures, while the old Phu Lam water tower survives as a reminder of the colonial period.

Life in District 6 is lived on the street, at dawn when goods are unloaded, through the day in a constant flow of motorbikes, and in the evening at pavement kitchens serving noodle soups, roast duck, herbal teas and other Chinese Vietnamese specialities. Lunar New Year and the mid autumn festival bring lion dances, lanterns and crowded temples, and traditional medicine shops perfume whole streets with dried herbs and roots.

Wide roads carry traffic towards the centre and the western provinces, buses run frequently, and the city's expanding rail and expressway projects will improve links further. In 2025 Vietnam reformed its system of local government and reorganised the wards of Ho Chi Minh City, although residents continue to use the familiar district name in everyday speech.

District 6 rewards visitors who enjoy markets, street food and living tradition, offering one of the most authentic and least polished corners of Ho Chi Minh City.
