Qujing

Qujing is a prefecture-level city in the northeastern part of Yunnan Province in southwestern China, situated on the Yunnan-Guizhou Plateau at an elevation of approximately 1,900 meters above sea level. With a total population of approximately 6.3 million people, Qujing is the second-largest city in Yunnan Province after the provincial capital Kunming and serves as an important transportation and economic hub connecting Yunnan with Guizhou Province and the broader southwestern China region.

Qujing has a history of over two thousand years, developing as an important administrative and military center during the Han Dynasty when China extended its control over the southwestern frontier. The city's strategic position on the overland routes between central China and the Yunnan plateau made it a perennial point of significance for controlling this geographically complex region. During various dynasties, Qujing served as a provincial capital and was a center of multi-ethnic cultural exchange involving Han Chinese, Yi, Miao, and other ethnic minority peoples of the region.

The Zhuanqiao Culture Site at Qujing is one of the most important prehistoric archaeological discoveries in Yunnan, providing evidence of Bronze Age settlement and material culture in the region. The city is also home to the Cuifeng Mountain Scenic Area, a beautifully forested mountain park with ancient Buddhist temples, stone carvings, and panoramic views of the surrounding plateau landscape. The nearby Pearl River source, one of the origins of China's third-longest river, is a scenic and symbolic attraction located within the prefecture.

Qujing's economy is driven by coal mining, which has historically been a major industry given the province's substantial coal reserves, as well as chemical manufacturing, tobacco processing, and agriculture. The city has also invested in developing newer industries including renewable energy, food processing, and tourism as it seeks to diversify beyond resource extraction.

The city has a strong tradition of tobacco cultivation, as Yunnan Province produces the majority of China's tobacco, and Qujing plays a central role in this industry. The Yunnan Hongta Group, one of China's largest tobacco corporations, has deep roots in this region.

Transportation has improved significantly with expressway connections to Kunming and Guiyang, and rail links integrating Qujing into the national and regional high-speed rail network.

Qujing University and other institutions serve the educational needs of the city's large population, with programs in agriculture, engineering, and business reflecting the local economic priorities.

Qujing's high-plateau setting, archaeological significance, natural scenery, and role as a gateway to the diverse ethnic landscapes of northeastern Yunnan make it a compelling destination for travelers exploring one of China's most culturally and ecologically diverse provinces.
