Rānipet
Ranipet lies in the northern part of Tamil Nadu in southern India, on the banks of the Palar River about a hundred and twenty kilometres west of Chennai. The town sits on a broad sandy plain framed by low rocky hills, on the historic route between the coast and the plateau of Karnataka. The climate is hot for most of the year, with the heaviest rain arriving with the north-east monsoon between October and December, when the usually dry riverbed can fill from bank to bank.
The town has a population of around fifty thousand, though the continuous urban area that includes neighbouring Walajapet and Arcot is considerably larger, and since 2019 Ranipet has been the headquarters of a district of its own. Its significance is industrial. It is one of the main centres of leather tanning and finishing in India, exporting shoes, bags and garments to Europe, and it also hosts a major boiler manufacturing plant of a national heavy engineering company, along with chemical, pharmaceutical and automotive factories in a large industrial estate.
The town takes its name from a queen. In 1714 the ruler of Gingee, Raja Desingh, was killed in battle against the Nawab of Arcot, and his young widow followed him in death; the settlement founded nearby was called Ranipet, the town of the queen, in her memory. The area was at the centre of the struggles between the French and British East India Companies in the eighteenth century, when nearby Arcot was the capital of the Carnatic and the scene of a famous siege. Under British rule a military cantonment and later tanneries were established here, and industrial expansion after independence turned the town into a manufacturing centre.
Ranipet itself is a working town rather than a tourist destination, but its surroundings are rich. Vellore, half an hour away, has one of the finest fortresses in southern India, a sixteenth-century granite stronghold surrounded by a wide moat and enclosing the beautifully carved Jalakandeswarar temple, along with the Sripuram golden temple, whose shrine is covered in gold leaf. Arcot preserves gateways and tombs from the days of the Nawabs, and the hill temples and reservoirs of the district make pleasant excursions. Kanchipuram, the ancient temple and silk-weaving city, lies within easy reach.
Local life is thoroughly Tamil, built around temples, cinema, cricket and family. Food centres on rice, sambar, dosa and idli, with the fiery non-vegetarian cooking of the northern districts and strong filter coffee. Festivals such as Pongal and the temple car processions of the region fill the streets each year. The tanning industry has brought prosperity but also serious concern over pollution of the Palar, and treatment plants and cleaner technologies are now a local priority.
The national highway between Chennai and Bengaluru passes the town, railway stations serve Walajah Road and Katpadi, and Chennai airport is about two hours away. Vellore's medical and technical institutions, among the best known in India, draw students from across the country.
Ranipet is important as an industrial and administrative centre set among some of Tamil Nadu's most historic towns.
