Riga

Riga is the capital and largest city of Latvia, situated on the southern shores of the Gulf of Riga and along the Daugava River. With a population of approximately 600,000 residents, it is the largest city in the Baltic States and one of the most vibrant urban centers in Northern Europe. Its strategic location has made it a major commercial, cultural, and political hub for centuries.

Founded in 1201 by Bishop Albert of Buxhoeveden, Riga quickly grew into an important trading post along the Baltic Sea. Throughout the medieval era, it became a powerful member of the Hanseatic League, thriving on commerce between Western Europe and Russia. The city changed hands numerous times — passing through German, Swedish, and Russian rule — before Latvia declared independence in 1918. After Soviet occupation from 1940 to 1991, Riga once again became the capital of a free and sovereign Latvia.

The Old Town of Riga, known as Vecrīga, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site celebrated for its remarkably preserved medieval architecture. The Riga Cathedral, Riga Castle, St. Peter's Church with its iconic spire, and the cobblestone streets of the old quarter draw millions of visitors each year. The city is also renowned for its outstanding collection of Art Nouveau buildings, which form one of the most concentrated clusters of this architectural style in the world. Wandering along Alberta Street or Elizabetes Street reveals stunning facades adorned with ornate details.

Riga has a rich cultural life anchored by the Latvian National Opera, the Latvian National Museum of Art, and the Latvian Ethnographic Open-Air Museum on the shores of Lake Jugla. The Central Market, housed in five massive former Zeppelin hangars, is one of the largest markets in Europe and a beloved institution for locals and tourists alike. Riga is also a buzzing nightlife destination, with its Old Town bars and contemporary clubs attracting visitors from across Europe.

The city benefits from a well-developed public transportation network including trams, trolleybuses, and buses, along with a growing cycling infrastructure. Riga International Airport connects Latvia to dozens of destinations across Europe. The University of Latvia and Riga Technical University are among the leading institutions of higher education, contributing to a strong academic and research environment.

Riga's economy is diverse, encompassing finance, trade, transport, and IT services. As a member of the European Union and NATO since 2004, Latvia has undergone significant modernization, and Riga stands at the forefront of this transformation. The city's blend of medieval heritage, Art Nouveau elegance, and modern urban dynamism makes it an essential destination for travelers and a thriving home for its residents.
