Rize
Rize is a coastal city located on the eastern shore of the Black Sea in northeastern Turkey. Nestled between the sea and the Pontic Mountains, the city enjoys a lush, green landscape shaped by one of the highest rainfall levels in the country. It serves as the capital of Rize Province and stands as an important regional hub in the Eastern Black Sea region.
The city has a population of approximately 100,000 people in the urban core, with the wider province home to around 340,000 residents. Rize holds national significance as the heartland of Turkish tea production, a status that has given it both economic importance and a distinct cultural identity recognized throughout Turkey and beyond.
The history of Rize stretches back to antiquity. Known in ancient times as Rhizus, the settlement was established by Greek colonists and later fell under Roman, Byzantine, and eventually Ottoman rule. The Ottoman period brought lasting administrative and cultural influence, and the city developed steadily as a trade and agricultural center along the Black Sea coast.
Rize is perhaps best known as the tea capital of Turkey. The terraced tea gardens cascading down the hillsides are a defining feature of the landscape and attract visitors from across the country. The Rize Tea Research Institute and local tea factories offer tours that provide fascinating insight into how Turkish tea, known as çay, is cultivated, harvested, and processed. The city's waterfront promenade offers scenic views of the Black Sea.
Culturally, Rize has a warm and hospitable character rooted in Black Sea traditions. The region is known for its distinctive folk music, horon dance, and traditional cuisine featuring anchovies, corn bread, and locally produced butter and honey. The Rize Museum showcases regional history, ethnography, and natural heritage, offering visitors a well-rounded introduction to local culture.
The city is connected to the rest of Turkey via the coastal highway that runs along the Black Sea, linking Rize to Trabzon to the west and Artvin to the east. The nearest major airport is Rize-Artvin Airport, a modern facility built on reclaimed land over the sea, which opened in 2021 and significantly improved regional connectivity. Public transportation within the city is provided by minibuses and municipal services.
Rize is home to Recep Tayyip Erdoğan University, named after the former prime minister and president who hails from the region. The university plays an important role in the educational and cultural life of the city, drawing students from across northeastern Turkey and contributing to local research and development.
The economy of Rize is anchored by tea agriculture, which employs a large portion of the rural population. Alongside tea, fishing, small-scale trade, and growing tourism contribute to the local economy. The city's diversity of natural scenery, from the Black Sea coastline to the alpine meadows and historic valleys of the Pontic Mountains, makes it an increasingly attractive destination for nature lovers and cultural travelers alike.
