Rui'an is a county-level city administered by Wenzhou, located in the southeastern coast of Zhejiang Province in eastern China. Situated on Wenzhou Bay where the Feijiang River meets the East China Sea, Rui'an has a population of approximately 1.4 million and is part of the vibrant Wenzhou metropolitan area, one of the most entrepreneurially dynamic regions in China. The city is known for its manufacturing industries, particularly in the production of auto parts, low-voltage electrical equipment, and pharmaceutical machinery.

The city is also known for its production of pharmaceutical packaging machinery, making it a significant supplier to the pharmaceutical industry across China.

The coastal location of Rui'an provides scenic and recreational resources. The nearby Nanxi River valley, though centered in the adjacent Yongjia County, is accessible from Rui'an and is considered one of the most beautiful river landscapes in Zhejiang, with clear waters, traditional riverside villages, and dramatic karst formations. The sea islands off Rui'an's coast offer beaches and seafood dining that attract visitors from across the region.

The local culture reflects the distinctive character of Wenzhou, with a dialect (Wenzhounese) so unique that it was reportedly used as a verbal code by Chinese agents during wartime because even other Chinese could not understand it. The people are known for their strong work ethic, entrepreneurial spirit, and family-based business networks. Traditional arts including Wenzhou opera (Yueju), crafts, and religious festivals mark the cultural calendar.

Rui'an is connected to Wenzhou by expressway and rail, and the broader region benefits from Wenzhou Longwan International Airport. High-speed rail has greatly improved connectivity to Shanghai, Hangzhou, and other major cities along the eastern coast. With its manufacturing dynamism, coastal scenery, and embodiment of the Wenzhou entrepreneurial spirit, Rui'an is a representative and interesting city in one of China's most commercially successful regions.
