Ruiru is a fast-growing town located in Kiambu County in the central region of Kenya, approximately 20 kilometers northeast of Nairobi, the national capital. Situated along the Ruiru River, the town has experienced explosive population growth in recent decades as Nairobi's expanding urban footprint has extended into the surrounding areas, transforming Ruiru from a modest agricultural town into a significant satellite city within the greater Nairobi metropolitan area. With a population estimated at over 200,000 people in the town itself and considerably more in the surrounding administrative area, Ruiru is one of Kenya's fastest-growing urban centers.

Ruiru's development as a settlement began during the British colonial period, when the area was incorporated into the white settler farming district of central Kenya's highlands. The fertile red soils and reliable rainfall of the region between Nairobi and the Aberdare Range made it suitable for mixed farming, and European farmers established coffee, tea, and horticultural farms in the surrounding countryside. The name Ruiru itself comes from the Kikuyu word for the black and white colobus monkey that once inhabited the local forests, reflecting the rich biodiversity of the central Kenyan highlands before extensive agricultural development altered the landscape.

Coffee cultivation has historically been among the most important agricultural activities in the Ruiru area, and the Kenya Coffee Research Institute is located in the town. This institution, established in 1948, conducts research into coffee varieties, cultivation methods, and processing techniques that have contributed significantly to Kenya's reputation for producing some of the world's finest Arabica coffees. Kenyan coffee, known for its bright acidity, fruity flavors, and full body, commands premium prices in international specialty coffee markets, and the research conducted in Ruiru has been instrumental in developing the coffee varieties that give Kenyan coffee its distinctive qualities.

The rapid urbanization of Ruiru has been driven primarily by the city's position on major transportation corridors leading northeast from Nairobi, including the Thika Superhighway, one of Kenya's most important national highways, which passes through the area. The availability of land at lower prices than in central Nairobi has attracted industrial and warehousing investment, and several manufacturing plants, distribution centers, and logistics facilities have been established in and around Ruiru. Residential development, ranging from middle-class housing estates to informal settlements, has spread rapidly across the area to accommodate the influx of urban migrants from across Kenya and the growing population of Nairobi's extended metropolitan region.

The economy of Ruiru is diverse, encompassing industry, commerce, agriculture, and services. Flower farming on large commercial horticultural farms in the surrounding area contributes to Kenya's significant cut flower export industry. The provision of services to Nairobi commuters, many of whom choose to live in Ruiru while working in the capital, supports a growing commercial sector of shops, restaurants, banks, and service businesses. Several schools and colleges serve the growing population, and healthcare facilities are expanding to meet demand.

Transportation is served by the Nairobi commuter rail system, with a station at Ruiru providing connections to Nairobi Central Station, as well as extensive matatu (minibus) services that link the town to Nairobi and surrounding areas. Ruiru's dramatic transformation from agricultural hinterland to dynamic urban center reflects the broader patterns of rapid urbanization occurring across East Africa as Kenya's economy grows and its cities expand.
