Russeifa lies in the Zarqa governorate of northern Jordan, on the highway that links the capital Amman with the industrial city of Zarqa, roughly midway between the two. It occupies a dry, rocky landscape of low hills and shallow valleys on the eastern edge of the Jordanian highlands, where the settled country begins to give way to the desert steppe. Summers are hot and dry, winters cool with occasional rain, and the city has grown until it almost touches its larger neighbours on both sides.

With a population of roughly half a million, Russeifa is one of the largest cities in Jordan, although it is rarely visited as a destination in itself. It forms part of a continuous urban corridor that contains a large share of the country's population and industry. Its economy has been shaped by phosphate mining, quarrying, cement, light manufacturing and the transport of goods along the main road and railway to the north.

The area has been inhabited since antiquity, lying close to ancient routes between the Jordan valley and the desert. The modern city, however, is largely a product of the twentieth century. Phosphate deposits discovered nearby led to the opening of mines in the 1930s, and a workers' settlement grew around them. The population expanded dramatically after 1948 and again after 1967, when Palestinian refugees settled here in large numbers, and further waves arrived from Iraq and Syria in later decades. The result is a young, densely populated and predominantly working-class city built rapidly on the hillsides.

Russeifa has few classical monuments, but its surroundings are rich in them. Amman with its Roman theatre and citadel, the desert castles to the east, and the Roman city of Jerash to the north are all within easy reach, and the King Talal Dam and the wooded hills of the Zarqa River valley offer greenery close by. Within the city, the old phosphate works and the mining landscape record an important chapter of Jordan's industrial history.

Daily life centres on family, mosques, markets and football. Streets are lined with bakeries, sweet shops and stalls selling falafel and shawarma, and the main commercial avenues are busy well into the evening. Community associations and youth centres play a large role, and the city has produced well-known footballers and athletes. Traditional Jordanian and Palestinian cooking dominates, with mansaf, maqluba and mezze served at family gatherings.

Frequent minibuses and taxis connect Russeifa to Amman and Zarqa, the main highway carries heavy freight traffic, and the city lies within reach of Queen Alia International Airport. Several private universities and colleges operate in the corridor, and the Hashemite University in Zarqa serves many students from the area.

Russeifa is significant as one of the busiest and most populous parts of Jordan, an ordinary but essential city whose growth mirrors the country's modern history of migration, industry and rapid urban change.
