Salamanca is a historic city in western Spain, the capital of the Province of Salamanca in the Castile and León autonomous community, situated on the banks of the Tormes River. One of Spain's most beautiful cities and home to one of the oldest universities in the Western world, Salamanca is a golden city — named for the warm hue of its sandstone buildings — recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site for its extraordinary ensemble of Romanesque, Gothic, Renaissance, and Baroque architecture.

The Old Cathedral (Catedral Vieja) of Salamanca, a Romanesque structure dating from the 12th century, and the New Cathedral (Catedral Nueva), a Gothic and Baroque construction begun in 1513 and completed in the 18th century, stand side by side in a remarkable architectural pairing. The Old Cathedral's Torre del Gallo, a Byzantine-influenced domed tower, and its collection of altarpieces and early paintings are of outstanding importance. A famous tradition involves finding a small frog carved on the façade of the University building — according to legend, students who spot it without help will have good luck in their exams.

The Convento de San Esteban, a Dominican convent with a spectacular Plateresque façade, and the Casa de las Conchas (House of Shells), a 15th-century mansion decorated with carved scallop shells — the symbol of the Camino de Santiago — are among the most photographed buildings in the city. The Faculty of Fine Arts and the Salamanca Art Nouveau Museum add depth to the cultural offer. Salamanca was named European Capital of Culture in 2002.

Salamanca is located about 200 kilometers from Madrid via the A50 motorway. High-speed rail connects it to Madrid in about one and a half hours. The city center is compact and best explored on foot, with most major monuments within easy walking distance of the Plaza Mayor.
