Salem

Salem is a major city in the state of Tamil Nadu in southern India, located in the Salem District at the intersection of the Shevaroy Hills to the north, the Nagaramalai Hills to the east, and the Jarugumalai Hill to the south. With a population of approximately 900,000, Salem is the fifth-largest city in Tamil Nadu and an important industrial and commercial center for the state. Known as the Steel City and the Mango City, Salem occupies a distinctive place in Tamil Nadu's economic landscape.

The history of Salem spans centuries. The area was part of various ancient kingdoms including the Chera, Chola, and Vijayanagara empires before coming under the Marathas and then the Nawabs of Arcot during the 18th century. The British East India Company gained control of the region in the late 18th century, and Salem District was formally established during British rule. The city grew as an administrative and trading center during the colonial period and has continued to expand in the post-independence era.

Salem is most widely known for its steel industry. The Salem Steel Plant (SSP), a unit of the Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL), is located here and specializes in the production of stainless steel, flat products, and high-precision specialty steels. The plant is one of the most important stainless steel producers in India and has given the city its steel industry identity. The presence of this major plant has attracted supporting industries and created a significant industrial ecosystem around the city.

The city is also famous throughout India and internationally for its mangoes, particularly the Salem variety known locally as Bangalora or Totapuri. These large, elongated mangoes with their distinctive tangy flavor are widely exported and processed into pulp for juices, beverages, and food products consumed globally. The mango orchards around Salem produce fruit that is a source of enormous regional pride and economic activity.

Salem is home to the Anna University Regional Campus and several engineering and arts colleges that serve the educational needs of the broader region. The Yercaud Hill Station, located in the Shevaroy Hills just 30 kilometers from Salem, is a popular weekend destination for the city's residents and visitors from across Tamil Nadu, offering cool temperatures, coffee plantations, a scenic lake, and wildlife spotting opportunities in the surrounding forest.

Salem is well connected by rail and road to Chennai, Bangalore, Coimbatore, and other major cities in South India. The National Highway that connects Chennai with Coimbatore passes through Salem, making it an important waypoint on this key transportation corridor. The Salem Airport has limited services. With its steel industry, mango orchards, proximity to scenic hill stations, and role as a significant commercial hub in central Tamil Nadu, Salem is an economically important and characterful city in southern India.
