Saltillo
Saltillo is the capital city of the state of Coahuila in northeastern Mexico, located at an elevation of approximately 1,600 meters in a valley surrounded by the Sierra Madre Oriental mountain range. With a population of approximately 900,000 and a metropolitan area of over 1.2 million, Saltillo is one of the most important industrial and commercial cities in northern Mexico. It has the distinction of being one of the highest-altitude major cities in Mexico and enjoys a cool, relatively dry climate.
Founded in 1577 by Spanish colonists, Saltillo is one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in northern Mexico and has served as the capital of Coahuila throughout most of its modern history. The city played significant roles in the colonial history of New Spain as a military outpost guarding northern territories and as a commercial hub on the Camino Real between Mexico City and the northern frontier. During the Mexican-American War, Saltillo was the site of the Battle of Buena Vista in 1847, a pivotal engagement near the city.
Saltillo's historic center preserves an impressive collection of colonial architecture centered on the iconic Cathedral of Santiago de Saltillo, a striking pink sandstone baroque church that dominates the main plaza. The Palace of Government, also facing the plaza, features historical murals depicting Coahuilan history. The city is also known for its distinctive sarapes — colorful, intricately woven woolen blankets and shawls — which are a celebrated regional craft and a symbol of Saltillo's cultural identity.
In recent decades, Saltillo has emerged as one of Mexico's most important automotive manufacturing centers. General Motors, Chrysler (Stellantis), Kia, and numerous automotive suppliers operate major plants in and around the city. This industrial base has made Saltillo a key player in the NAFTA and now USMCA manufacturing supply chain, attracting billions of dollars in foreign investment. The broader Coahuila-Monterrey industrial corridor is one of the most economically dynamic zones in Latin America.
The city is connected by highway to Monterrey (about 85 kilometers to the northeast) and other major cities. The Francisco Sarabia International Airport provides air connections to major Mexican and some US destinations. The University of Coahuila and the Autonomous University of Coahuila serve the educational needs of the region.
Saltillo's colonial heritage, sarape craft tradition, cool mountain climate, and transformation into a modern automotive powerhouse combine to create a city of considerable historical depth and contemporary economic dynamism in the heart of northern Mexico.
