San Cristóbal

San Cristóbal is the capital of Táchira State in western Venezuela, built on a series of terraces in the southern spur of the Andes at about eight hundred metres above sea level. The mountains rise steeply around it, the Torbes River runs below, and the position close to the Colombian border gives the city a strongly binational character. Its altitude produces a pleasant climate of warm days and cool evenings, with rainfall spread across much of the year and a landscape of green ridges and coffee slopes.

Roughly two hundred and seventy thousand people live in the city, and the wider urban area including Táriba, Cordero and San Juan de Colón approaches twice that number. San Cristóbal is the commercial hub of the Venezuelan Andes and the main urban centre near the crossing at San Antonio del Táchira, opposite the Colombian city of Cúcuta, which has made trade, transport and cross border movement central to its economy.

The city was founded in 1561 by the Spanish captain Juan de Maldonado y Ordóñez, making it one of the older settlements in the country. It grew slowly as a highland farming town and then rapidly in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries with the expansion of coffee growing, which remains the signature crop of Táchira. The region has produced a remarkable number of Venezuelan presidents, and Andean politics has long carried weight far beyond the state's borders.

The most famous event in the local calendar is the International Fair of San Sebastián, held every January, a two week celebration with agricultural and industrial exhibitions, concerts, parades and equestrian events. It coincides with the Vuelta al Táchira, the country's most prestigious cycling race, whose mountain stages have made the region a nursery of Venezuelan cycling talent.

Landmarks include the cathedral of San Sebastián on the central plaza, the Salesian church, the neoclassical Palacio de los Leones which houses the state government, the Ateneo cultural centre and the Pueblito Andino, a reconstruction of a traditional mountain village. The city has an athenaeum, museums of art and regional history, and a large covered market where Andean produce, cheeses, sweets and handicrafts are sold. Beyond the city, the road climbs into the páramo towards Mérida past cloud forest, trout streams and villages of tiled roofs.

Buses and shared taxis provide transport, while the Panamerican highway links the city north towards Maracaibo and east across the Andes. Juan Vicente Gómez International Airport at San Antonio serves the region.

San Cristóbal is a significant university town. The Universidad Nacional Experimental del Táchira, a campus of the Universidad de Los Andes and the Catholic University of Táchira all have their seats here, giving the city a large student population and an active intellectual life.

The city is important as the gateway between Venezuela and Colombia and popular for its mild mountain climate, its coffee country and the energy of its January fair.
