Sāngli

Sangli is a city located in the southern part of Maharashtra state in western India, situated on the banks of the Krishna River in the Deccan Plateau. It serves as the administrative headquarters of Sangli District and forms part of the Sangli-Miraj-Kupwad Urban Agglomeration, which together constitute a significant urban area in Maharashtra with a combined population of over half a million people. Sangli is well known across India as a major commercial and agricultural hub, particularly in the turmeric and grape trade, and has earned the nickname "Turmeric City" due to its central role in the country's turmeric production and trade.

Sangli was the capital of the Sangli princely state during the period of British India. The state was ruled by the Patwardhan family, a prominent Maratha dynasty, and was considered one of the better-administered princely states of the Deccan. The Patwardhans were noted for their patronage of classical Indian music and dance, particularly Hindustani classical music, and Sangli became an important center for this cultural tradition. This musical heritage continues to be a source of pride for the city, which has produced notable classical musicians and continues to support musical education and performance.

Turmeric (haldi) has been cultivated in the Krishna River valley for centuries, and Sangli has developed into one of the largest and most important turmeric trading markets in Asia. The city's turmeric market handles enormous quantities of the spice, attracting traders from across India and from international markets. Sangli turmeric is considered among the finest in India due to its high curcumin content, and the city's name is virtually synonymous with quality turmeric in Indian commodity markets. Alongside turmeric, Sangli District is a major producer of grapes, and the region around the city has emerged as one of India's most important grape-growing and wine-producing areas.

The Ganapati Temple at Sangli is one of the most important religious sites in the city, visited by thousands of devotees throughout the year. The Ganapati festival, celebrated with great enthusiasm in Maharashtra, is one of the most significant cultural events in Sangli's annual calendar. The city also has several other temples, mosques, and churches reflecting the diversity of its population.

Sangli is home to several colleges and educational institutions affiliated with Shivaji University. The city's educational infrastructure serves students from the surrounding Sangli District and neighboring districts of Maharashtra and Karnataka. The proximity of Miraj, an important railway junction town immediately adjacent to Sangli, gives the urban agglomeration excellent rail connectivity to Mumbai, Pune, Bengaluru, and other major cities.

Walchand College of Engineering, a respected technical institution, is located in Sangli and is one of the oldest engineering colleges in Maharashtra. The presence of this and other educational institutions has contributed to the growth of a skilled professional community in the city and region.

Sangli's identity as the turmeric capital of India, its rich musical heritage, its grape and wine industry, and its well-developed agricultural commerce make it a distinctive and prosperous city in Maharashtra, representing the agricultural and cultural vitality of the Krishna River valley.
