Santa Catarina

Santa Catarina lies in the north-eastern Mexican state of Nuevo Leon, forming the western edge of the Monterrey metropolitan area. The city is squeezed into a broad valley between the pale limestone walls of the Sierra Madre Oriental, with the jagged Cerro de las Mitras rising to the north and the Santa Catarina River running through it, dry for most of the year but capable of becoming a torrent after tropical storms. The climate is hot and semi-arid, softened a little by the height of the surrounding mountains.

Around three hundred thousand people live in the municipality, part of a metropolitan region of more than five million. Santa Catarina is above all an industrial city, hosting factories that produce steel, glass, cement, machinery, chemicals and car components for one of the strongest manufacturing economies in Latin America. Its position on the highway that leads west towards Saltillo and central Mexico makes it a natural corridor for freight.

The settlement dates from the seventeenth century, when Spanish colonists founded a mission and village beside the river in a region then inhabited by nomadic indigenous groups. For centuries it remained a small farming community growing maize, beans and fruit in the valley. Its transformation came with the industrialisation of Monterrey during the twentieth century, when new plants opened along the western corridor and workers arrived from across northern Mexico, expanding the town into a dense industrial suburb with its own identity and government.

The great attraction of the area is the mountains. The Huasteca Canyon, a protected area of vertical cliffs, twisted rock strata and dry riverbeds, lies within the municipality and is one of the finest rock-climbing destinations in Latin America, drawing climbers, hikers and cyclists throughout the year. Its dramatic scenery, sculpted stone and pools of clear water after rain make it a favourite escape from the city. The historic centre preserves a colonial parish church and a shaded main square where markets and fiestas take place, particularly around the feast of Saint Catherine in November.

Cultural life is closely tied to that of Monterrey, whose museums, concert halls and universities are easily reached, but Santa Catarina has its own parks, sports facilities, community centres and a strong tradition of northern Mexican music, with norteno bands playing at weekend gatherings. The regional cuisine is famous for grilled meat, cabrito, flour tortillas and machaca.

The city is served by the metropolitan bus network and by extensions of the Monterrey light rail system, while federal highways link it to the industrial cities of the north and to the airport across the metropolitan area. Several universities and technical institutes maintain campuses nearby, training engineers and technicians for local industry.

Santa Catarina is important as a productive industrial city, but visitors remember it for the astonishing canyon on its doorstep, where the desert mountains rise abruptly above the roofs of a modern Mexican suburb.
